Oh.

Actually, I just wanted to say 'Epic Schwing'.

Today I took my Schwing on my rollers. Man I suck at rollers.

calv 11-05-11 01:25 PM

Damn, I wish I had rollers. I would love to be able to ride but I'm sick as hell. I'd be awesome riding on them with my long sleeve fleece, thick wool hoodie, scarf, and big puff vest in sw8 sweats right now.

Plus I'm looking for a beat commuter bike. ANyone know where I can score a cheap (and I mean cheap) road frame I can just convert? Craiglist time I guess. I'm also having trouble figuring out what my next move is to build this Kagero. Should I get the cranks/chainring after my wheelset?

hamfoh 11-05-11 01:31 PM

me too. I do not like the trainer I got

EpicSchwinn 11-05-11 03:28 PM

Today I bought a 59cm Soma Rush frame in Khaki Green.

Congratulations!! Looks super nice.

NICE! Are you just going to swap parts from the Schwinn over, or are you building this one up?

P.S. ****, you're tall.

EpicSchwinn 11-05-11 04:49 PM

Thanks guys! I am very excite.

@jaytron - I'm going to swap everything over for now except seatpost, headset, fork, and bottom bracket. Once I get it rideable I'll see what needs to be changed.

Oh, and I'm only 6'1" but I have a 35" inseam.

:O

I hope you're keeping the Schwinn, she's pretty.

Dude, if you are 6'1" and have a 35" inseam the last thing you need is a 59cm top tube. You need a shorter top tube and a longer seat tube. Basically you probably need a 56cm bike with a long seat post.

The 59cm top tube will prove to be very long for you.

Notice how you run lots of seatpost now and a short stem?
http://www.pedalroom.com/p/1987-schw...ler-2742_1.jpg

With a 59cm bike, your stem will be even shorter, adversely affecting handling.

EpicSchwinn 11-05-11 05:34 PM

Just as a note, the schwinn was a hand-me-down so the short stem is just what it came with. I think my arms are average for someone of my height. Think I should call them up and switch it for a 57cm?

edit: Geo charts say effective top toob is 578mm.

You should go to a bike shop and sit on 55, 57, and 59cm bikes and see which get you in the ballpark in terms of reach. Remember, saddle height can go up, but top tube length cannot be easily shortened.

When you are spending money, get EXACTLY what you want/need.

jdgesus 11-05-11 05:42 PM

the 59 would fit me great with a 120mm stem... im 6'3" and im pretty arm-y

i'd rather have more the right toptoob and taller post, and rise the stem to match the saddle to bar drop...

jdgesus 11-05-11 05:43 PM

that soma green does look f'n hot tho

The Rush has a level top tube. Why are there measurements for actual and effective?

+1

That's the way to do it.

gonna vomit...

I'm gonna see if I can get my order changed to 57cm then. My 29er is really big (61) and I actually like the way it feels although it's not meant to fit or ride like a track bike. If anything I think my schwinn feels a little cramped to me - when I'm out of the saddle and leaning forward I come really close to hitting my knees on the bars so I doubt I'd want to go as low as the 55cm. I'll try to measure my schwinn tonight.

Why don't you put the order on hold till you go to the bike shop and sit on a few bikes and see what top tube length works for you?

As of right now, this thread is like: "I just ordered some size 12 shoes...I don't know my shoe size." then "Maybe I'll change my order to size 11.5." The 2nd decision is no better than the first.

RGNY 11-05-11 06:04 PM

rearranged the basement for winter bike storage and workshop.

w/ the Leader 725 and Fuji League as tarckers, looking to outfit the Sputnik (which is just a little big for me) as a townie for spring.....

also unboxed the rollers for winter sweat-sessions.

I emailed them and requested it to be put on hold. I'm going to do some measuring on my Schwinn tonight because I know what I do and don't like about the fit on it. On Monday I'll take a trip to my LBS and see if I can test ride a few frames. I'm a little bit curious about what I should be looking for though. I'm sure all of the bikes at my lbs will have different stem and bar setups and they don't stock any track bikes so I'm curious if a good fitting road bike will translate well to a bike with much tighter geometry.

Don't get confused by "track geometry". I'm 6'1" and both my Specialized Tarmac road bike and Tiemeyer track bike have 58cm top tubes with 120mm stems. Both are race bikes but the Tiemeyer have more aggressive head tube and seat tube angles...but the top tube length is the same.

When you go to the shop, look at the road race bikes that have a "crit" geometry. Criterium races are like track races in the street. Lots of turning so the geometry is a bit tighter. Basically, you'll be looking for the Specialized Tarmac, Trek Madone, type bikes. You won't absolutely need to test ride to see. I guarantee you that once you get on the 55, 57, & 59cm (or 56, 58, and 60cm) bikes you will immediately feel tight, just right, or stretched out. You'll pretty much be Goldielocks. If you are in-between sizes, one size being too big and the next size down being too small, go with the smaller size.

Remember, you are only checking for upper-body extension, which is governed by the top tube.

EpicSchwinn 11-05-11 07:08 PM

Sounds good. My LBS is a Trek dealer so I'll keep an eye out for a Madone. Thanks a lot for all the help Carleton! Definitely happy I won't be stuck with an awkward bike.

Today I got frustrated - why can't I find pictures of the inside of a Mission Workshop bag? Am I missing something? Or has no one taken pictures yet?

What part specifically do you want? I have a vandal and I'll more than gladly take some for you.

homebrewk 11-05-11 08:05 PM

Leuky... please fix that text in your sig! Create your PedalRoom now!!!!

Sherblock 11-05-11 08:14 PM

I actually had a vandal for a day but returned it - to big. Thanks for offering though!

I'm actually more interested to learn about the messenger bags. They don't have velcro strips so open quietly, which is what I'm looking for. My Timbuk2 alerted everyone in the room I was open in it  Looking to maybe get past that.
