I've been running the same gatorskin up front since 2008 daily on my commuter and it still hasn't flat spotted or given me a flat... it's drying out sadly (the meshed sidewall is taking it rather well despite all the hate of the sidewall) and I've been thinking of taking it out to pasture aka rear...
I think it's the "ultra" monkier on it (I.e. old "ultra gatorskin" name) which conti used to add to all their tire models.

I rather be rocking "GATORSKIN" than "THICKSLICK" any day.

Ride fast enough and no-one can read them.

I should clarify. I don't dislike the sidewalls. It would just look super ugly on my build. Also I hate that the label is on both sides. Srsly, wtf is up with that?

This is the reason why I don't run gatorskins. I am vain.

If you flatspot a front tire, you're my hero!

I meant a "flat spot" like this:

I'm not exactly sure if that's the right word through.

Sherblock 05-13-12 07:01 PM

Leuky, is what you're trying to describe continuous around the tire?

Nagrom_ 05-13-12 07:02 PM

The tire starts to become planar? its flat all the way around.

Makes for bad cornering.

yup

gigantor 05-13-12 07:17 PM

Good lord. This is just another reminder my road bike needs new tires. I figure they'd be fine after 2000 miles, but they don't look fine at all. Probably go with continental GP 4000s.

Nagrom_ 05-13-12 07:21 PM

Time to do 5 chem lab reports! woo procrastination!

You're talking about something like "chicken strips" on motorcycles?

I used to run these tires and I was surprised at how long they lasted! I actually just changed my front to a hardshell a month ago. Lasted since 2008. Good stuff

Yup. I'm cramming at least 5 days of work into tonight. Caffeine will play a key role.

jimmytango 05-13-12 07:31 PM

I can't wait for work to be done. This is the worst hangover ever. Seriously.

I've been casually drinking since 3 or so. I should probably slow down a bit. Big burger and poker is on the way so that should help. Refilling water bottle now.

First thing I thought:
"Holy sh*t, that's young!"

Second thing I thought:
"God damn, I'm stupid."

I envy you so much right now. Drinking since 3? Burger? Poker? Luckyyy

Oops I lied I had chicken shwarma around noon. Then I saw the $5 beer + burger deal and had that, around 12:30, with an extra beer. Then I rode another 10 miles. Started back on the beerwagon around 3:30 I reckon. Trying to pace myself. Can't believe I'm having another burger. I'm such a pig.

Dannihilator 05-13-12 07:56 PM

Today I put in this with the 930.

They claim it weighs 16.8, I'd bet on 17-ish. Big deal, that is a really damn lightweight steel bike with disc brakes.

I trust them because they actually weigh their own parts (unfortunately as you experienced, without compensating for the differences in weight across various sizes), rather than going off weight given from manufacturers.

I'm not stressing about it--CC is a great shop, and loyalty is a big part of the reason I'm considering buying the Le Roi Le Veut. CC wouldn't sell a ****ty bike.

One thing you may want to consider is the sizing of the bars, amount of bar tape, stem length, crank arm length, etc. when comparing parts on their smallest frame, vs. the larger frames, and extra material for the larger sized frame... all of this could easily exceed a pound of weight.

My BMC roadie came with 440mm width bars, 110mm stem, and 175mm cranks which I'm sure isn't the case for the smaller sized frames.

I'm a fairly small guy, so mine came with 42cm bars, a 110mm stem, and 172.5mm cranks. I'm no weight-weenie anyway...my bike and I combined weigh around 160lbs, so it's not something I really need to worry about.

I'm being told I had a dozen shots, four beers, and two pint-glasses of whiskey and coke last night. Stupid. Very, very stupid. Today, I've had a Bloody Mary, an Ommegang Witte, chilaquiles, a grilled cheese sandwich, a Red Bull, some Tylenol, and a bunch of water. I also had to deep clean my kitchen, because I'm getting a "surprise" health inspection tomorrow. I think I'm gonna bail on my friends tonight and just go home.

hamfoh 05-13-12 08:39 PM

today I sold my blue 722, built up

RGNY 05-13-12 08:39 PM

had a great early morning ride, tackled crazy yardwork, made carbonara for dinner and polished off a bottle of Evodia garnacha over the course of the evening.....
