I'll be celebrating my birthday by going to the lbs and getting a Specialized saddle, and then going to the gym to do squats.

<- wants cross bike, no funds for cross bike :(

Today I'm allowed back here again. So much has happened since I was last here, not even sure where to begin...

1. You guys were so right about Vittoria Randonneurs - slug central. I went from size 28 Randos to size 25 Zaffiro Pros and the difference is astounding. Learn to change the occasional flat tire, and it will set you free. No need for bombproof tires. I haven't gotten any flats yet with the Zaffiros, and they literally weigh half as much.

2. Bike Polo is awesome. I built four mallets and picked up a cheap beatup hybrid w/V-brakes off Craigslist ($50). Mallets cost about $10 each to build (used ski poles from local shop, hockey tape, HDPE heads, hardware). Also grabbed some super high density hot weather hockey balls (non AGS). Been out screwing around once or twice to work on my "skills". Going to start going to the local pickup games to watch, and play (once I get my bike set - still need crankset, convert rear wheel, and add spoke guard to front wheel). I bought some straight bars for $7 on CL and chopped them down a bit, added Oury grips. Also took off the size 35 tires and put my old size 28 Randos on it.

Those are the two biggest new things I guess.

Spoonrobot 09-11-12 06:34 AM

Bike Polo goes in the FGFS section. Thanks for stopping by.

Ahh. Was wondering why we didn't have a forum for it. Thanks.

3. I started wearing a helmet. Went and tried on a Lazer O2... wow. Tried on a lot of helmets in my day but they always hurt my head or felt funny. The O2 feels nice and comfy. Love the fit system. And now I get to ride faster http://theblackkeysfanlounge.com/for...tansmoking.gif

Haha what I mean is, I worry a lot less about "what if". So yeah, right or wrong, I ride faster when I have a helmet on and don't have to worry about my brains spilling all over the street. More confident, less worried. More faster. =P

Same. The worst part is I even have a frame, but no $$$ for the rest of the parts. Skipping cross season this year. :/

Today I thought I was gonna be hungover but I'm not. I think the key is I didn't do any shots last night. Perhaps I should take a lesson from this... but then that would mean no shots of Malört and that would be sad.

Today: work, shopping and hanging out with a friend, then chai/Indian sweets with another friend. Tomorrow, pick up my Riot Fest wristband. Thursday, watch football. Friday skip Riot Fest official show but use my wristband to see Alkaline Trio at Empty Bottle. Saturday-Sunday RIOT FEST all day all night. So excited.

Good call on alk3 at the bottle. I have a very old alk3 tattoo that gets mad shoutouts to this day.

I had a few shots of Malort recently. Started at Revolution (Malort, beers) then Handlebar (Malort, beers, bourbon)... then I threw up a Handlebar salad and mac'n'cheese all over my bathroom floor. =(

changes include... Velocity/Formula deepV's (MSW front), 700x25 Zaffiro Pros (not pictured), Tektro R539 front brake, Brooks B17N saddle.

Also Sugino RD2 Messenger arms (175mm). I forget if those were added before or after my ban.

Surprise visit from corporate head guys today. Very impressed with the general state of things. Good times.

Welcome back LL.

Kaz, why not just ride the Volpe like you did last year?

love mine. wish i'd just gotten the frameset though. i got a deal on a complete, but the stock build does nothing for such a great frame. pretty much everything will be swapped out by spring and what i can't get a few bucks for will go to the co-op.

Because it is all set up as my winter commuter and switching it back and forth every week last year was a giant, annoying, pain in the butt. Also, cross takes a lot out of my life. Dedicating all day every Sunday (half of my very precious weekend) to drive out to some far-flung suburb & spend all day there, plus practicing and training, plus I suck and am way out of shape right now and have fallen back into smoking (!!!) lately due to serious life suck, plus I just don't want to.

well it is a great build for around town, but yes... my frameset was built up a few different ways and getting nice stuff on it is very very worthwhile. it's heavy, but ****ing dialed in every way.

i raced on it sunday and honestly couldn't be happier. it's so ****ing quick yet stable, and stiff enough to respond to explosive efforts in the dirt.

the race was ****ing HARD and that picture of me falling was the FIRST corner. I got a great callup and had a fantastic ****ing start so i was likely one of the first 15 of 90 into the turn, but someone hit my wheel and sent me into the dirt. I got up and powered into what was probably my best race yet until i rolled a tubular after the barriers on the fourth lap. i glued them myself and just don't have a steady enough hand to glue well. plus my remount was on the short list of 'least smooth ever.' the tire came half off and i ran it a quarter of a lap to the pits where the neutral tech told me we could pull the tire back on but my race was over. i went at lazy/scared pace on an unglued tubie for the next lap and a half, enough to place and not DNF.

the results are TOTALLY ****ed up and they counted half the field as down one lap, so the results aren't really important. what i did learn is that 1: given a good start, if you have good position there is no 'pacing' yourself in sscx. you go all ****ing out and run damage control so you don't die and or break yourself. that's the only way to get faster and that's the only way to hold a good position, because the fast guys aren't holding anything back for any sprints. you just do it.
and 2. tubies are worthless if you can't glue them.

i was pretty bummed about rolling my tubular but all in all i was happy to just hear people cheering me on and know i was ahead of a lot of guys that i consider to be STUPID kinds of fast.
