How do you decide?
Naming your bike? Is it after someone that you've known? Human name or something different.
I know there are other people here strange enough to name their bike. Mine needs one.
I also would like to know what your bike's name is so I don't end up meeting you sometime and realize that we both picked the same thing.
Must pour more Jameson now.

my oldest friend and i havwe always called our things The Beast (capital letters and definite article included)
the name was applied to motorbikes, cars (a little 799cc fiat), all of our bicycles of which there have been too many to count, and when i moved out- my new flat.
just make sure its more original than the name most blokes use for their manhood.
would you give it a girls name, like they do to ships and stuff?

I treat bikes the same way I treat pets... once you name them, they are certain to die. My snake was named "snake", the fish was "fish". My wife and I have two rabbits, but she wouldn't let me name them "Rabbit 1" and "Rabbit 2". They are now Ralf and George, and they haven't died yet. My bike is "bike" and it has survived a couple of wrecks so far. As soon as I give it a name, the frame will crumple.

First bike - Hank (mountain, small frame, tough, pitbull-ish, after Henry Rollins)
Second bike - Absentia, lady like, large frame.
Current love and third bike - Gretchen (after Gretchen Mol but I like the way the name is elegant but conjures up a certain randy-ness to it)
Fourth bike, not quite built up yet - Orange Dream (since it's orange after all).

I only had one bike worthy of naming and it named itself, not the other way round. My orange bike, when it had the white turbo and white cinelli bars, was Orange Creamcicle (not that I actually called it that, but that's what I named it in my head). Now that I have a black saddle, black bars, and a bunch of rubber on it, it's The Great Pumpkin. But it's like a cat, most people don't know its secret name.

Bikes: For dirt: Brodie Climbmax. For touring: IF Independance. For Commuting: Reflecto-Fixie.
I name a bike after the first few rides based on what he/she feels like to ride and what his or her personality is like. The name usually just comes to me, and it's usually a human name. My current bikes are:
Rebeccah - my custom steel touring bike. Rides like a smooth dream. She goes by Becky if she's feeling saucy.
Suzie - my cross-country mountain bike. A bubbly girl who likes it fun and dirty.
Mack - my fixie. Named after Mack the Knife. He and I cruise for chicks downtown.
Poz - an old banger hybrid I keep around for people to borrow. Old and cantankerous, but with a sense of humour.

My oh so Sexy MTB is called Sadie, like Sexy Sadie. BUT...the fixie i'm building will be called Alice. I think it's one of the only names that bad TV characters and horrible people I've met have not ruined yet. If you are looking for trouble, name it after your GF or Wife.

My dad's guitar is a Betty. He might disagree, but he'd be wrong.

Bikes: too damn many
hmm...i guess im super boring or extremely unoriginal. i just refer to my bikes as their make. my fixie is known as 'the motobecane', my SS MTB is known as the 'the specialized'. my other bikes...gee... 'shogun', 'iron horse', etc etc.... my total POS 88 nissan sentra has a name though...'little bugger'.
i dont what what ill do if i get another bike made by the same manufactorer, i guess ill have to start naming them.

Bikes: Specialized Stumpjumper M2Comp; Habanero Ti-Team; Slingshot Road; 1962 converted Raliegh fixer aka: The Beast
Fixie #1, as in the first to be fixed, is known as "Sir Walter Raliegh of Nottingham" or just "Sir Walter". The moustache bars lend to the name.
Fixie #2, the Slingshot, is simply "the Slinger" or "Slingblade" depending on its mood or method of use.
Fixie #3, Paramount track, "the Mount"
Fixie #4, the Marinoni TT, "Pinky Tuscedero"
