I've tried 48x17 and 50x18 for the riding I've done around my area. They are essentially the same. I tried the latter out on the velodrome this past weekend and it was definitely too low. The 50x16 that I'm trying out next week will be something different for me.

I just purchased a 15t, so I'll be pushing 46x15 by next weekend; we'll see what an 11 GI increase feels like on the roads.

I want to eventually change the gearing lower cause it leaves me with only one skid patch, but I have a few steep hills I go down that I couldn't imagine with lower gearing.
I really need to work on getting a higher cadence though.

Ordered a 15t cog for the track this Saturday. Hopefully it gets here by then.
Couldn't accelerate fast enough on 48/14. I think 48/15 will be a lot better.

48/14 for about a year now, but I just picked up an EAI Deluxe 17t... so 48x17 here I come. Trying to climb hills a bit easier and practice my cadence. Feel like 14 is just too much for me now even though I'm in love with the top speed I get from it. Oh well.

48/15 for beginner racing
49/15 for beginner racing
50/15 for beginner and/or intermediate racing
47/14 for intermediate racing
48/14 for intermediate and/or advanced racing
49/14 for advanced racing
50/14 for advanced racing
This is a common gear progression at our track for beginners. As you get stronger you will be able to push bigger gears. Notice how the 48 gets lots of use. If you already have a 48, I suggest buying in this order:
1st Purchase: 48t + 16t + 15t
2nd Purchase: 49t
3rd Purchase: 50t
4th Purchase: 47t + 14t
Those gears will take you through about 2 seasons of racing with LOTS of gear combination possibilities.

I'm sure you'd be fine with 48/16 at a training session. I run 49/16 at them. No real need to go higher.
