Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I can't explain why you can get those speeds using the same gear ratio. I run a wireless Bontrager computer and believe it to be close to accurate. All I know is that when the computer his about 21.6 that I'm literally spining my ass off the seat and she no go no mo...

77.17 to 66.93

40/14/16

No computer so I don't know my speed or cadence, the calculator didn't have 27x1-1/4 for tyre size so I fudged with 700x28

That's kind of ironic, I know roadies who ride fixed to practice their spinning technique with a lowish ratio then use actual road bikes to do some gruesome intervals.

Well, my single speed IS my road bike right now. I've been riding for decades and find that my style works best for me. On a mulit speed bike I find I'm most comfortable with 53/12. For me it's all about the grunt and not the spinning. You might be surprised at how thoroughly my method works the upper body as well.

True. If you're in the western part of the state. Of course you have to climb those hills first.

34X16 150mm cranks and 700X38 tires. It's all fun except the downhills, but they are the briefest part of the ride y'know?

Seems strange to me too, I used machars gear calculator and got that, using 700x28's you'd have to spin 126 rpm for 27 mph. To average that for a 4 mile commute is either totally badass or internet inflation.

I'm rocking like 44/16 right now (72.5 GI). I need to replace the drivetrain soon, and the only other chainring I have is a 52. I'm going to attempt my first fixed tour to Tallahassee (actually moderately hilly, believe it or not), so I'm gonna step it down to 68.6 GI, which is 52/20!!! HATERS GON HATE.

My first fixie ever was 52/15. The more I ride the more I hate mashing. Spin to win.

^ My story, more or less. The more I ride, the more I want to spin a lower gear. Healthier, too, after all.

Had a 40/15 at first (original chainring), then got a 44t when a crash bent the entire front mech (and rear triangle, but that was fixed). The 44t came on a 155mm crank, which is insanely small for a 1.88m person - and the only 170mm replacement they had was a 42t, so I took it. Now contemplating a 17t rear...

27mph Average! How many times have you won nationals/state? How is it like being a Cat1 racer? Any tips for aspiring racers? When are you going pro?

HAHAHAHAHA. No. 27mph is 127rpm

In order for you to 'spin-out' at 35mph with that setup, you will be spinning at 166rpm. Either your one-way 4mi commute is downhill with no lights and you have robot legs, or there is something else going on here. I'm voting for the latter of the two.

For road rides in the local hills:

46x18/20 on the Scrambler
47x18/20 on the Lotus

My Fuji stays indoors and is currently at 48x16.

EDIT: All are on 700x23 tires.
