Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

hey guys, im thinking about two different gear ratios. the bike will be a redline monocog 29er modified for the street. im going to run 50cm big apples for tires and change the stock 32t chainring to a 42t with either a 16t or 17t rear cog.
the 16t will produce 76 gear inches while the 17t is at 71.5 gear inches. since the bike is a little heavier than a traditional road bike should i go with the 17t rear cog? im a pretty strong guy but the closer i get to 80 gear inches the more i am worried about hills and stuff...
with that bike what do you guys think?

I'd personally say 16. Unless your town is REALLY hilly. But 42t is pretty low anyways IMO. I live in a relatively hilly area. Not really many HUGE hills, but still hilly, and I rock a 45x16 and get by pretty well.

It really depends how you intend to ride your bike. I'm on 42x19 right now because I feel like keeping it kind of slow but with a high cadence. I would probably feel the same way about riding a 29er on the street

78 inches for my current setup.

Used to ride 86.5 gear inches on my Concept and before that 80.31 on my conversion. That was by far my favorite setup - the conversion that is.

42x17 (64.88) right now. Added an extra tooth on the rear cog this past week just to change it up.

48 x 18 = 72 inches. I often cycle in head winds and have hills.

I met some guy that rides 48x14 with small panniers, all the ocean wind, and hills. Freaking blows my mind

True, but doesn't it also semi depend on where i am riding like hills and stuff, i mean, i do simple city riding in Anaheim. Plus, I am on the tightest of budgets and can't even afford to get more chain rings to experiment, although that is most likely what i just need to do....

46 x 17 on the road, 46 x 19 in the woods, both fixed. Nice setup for Maine.

Why not swap cogs instead? They are cheap.

+1

$20 a pop for a rear cog is much cheaper than a chainring.

That is what I am doing, trying to find a nice balance for city riding.

58.6 Gear Inches. Its a 44 x 18 on 24" mountain bike wheels, this gets me through the frequent 300 foot hills around here.

46/16,17,18

Right now it's 46/18 with the 17 on the otherside.

I like 46/17 best but I'm thinking of either going to a 45t chainring or a 48t 'ring. Can't decide

38/18, 54.28 inches. There are some flat stretches near me, and I make a point of sprinting on them. According to my Velo 5, I've maxed at 22.7 mph. According to the calculator, that's 141 rpm. I figure that's not bad for a cruiser...

46x15 on my 650c wheels comes to about 74.6 GI. My vote is wrong in the poll though because I mistyped into the calculator at first. Totally flat here in Chicago, we'll see on my ride home how it does in the 15-25mph headwind...

going 48-16 o see if i can use it to gain speed o the flats and just power sprint up the hills, but may go back to 48-17 for more spin even if going slower.
