My All City Big Block complete came with ALex R450's laced to All City hubs. I was going to sell these wheels brand new but I am now thinking of maybe riding them around. They are pretty light and look good on the bike. My question is are Alex R450's any good, meaning do they hold up to everyday city riding? I am also 245lbs so I am not sure if these wheels will hold up very well. Does anyone have any experience the these rims that they can share?

Considering your weight (beside the fact they're generic factory wheels), you definitely will want them to be tensioned and trued or else they'll be nothing but trouble.

Thanks. I read through that thread before I posted this but didn't see anything to make me lean one way or the other. I think I am just going to sell them and pick up some black Sun M13 II's, seems like those get pretty good reviews around here. It is hard departing with my faithfull white deep v's though.

I ride Alex R450 on my Trek 1.2 '09 - I commuted on it exclusively until I finished my fixed-gear conversion, riding hard over bumpy roads and pavement, occasional "cyclocrossing" with it over unpaved paths and two accidents. Now, I do weigh nearly half as much (145lbs @ 1.88m) and "dance" the bike under me to minimize impacts when on rough surfaces, but hard riding is hard riding, regardless of weight. The rear is slightly out of true by now, but nothing that's not easily fixable - only reason I haven't gotten round to it is because I haven't been using this bike lately.

They're reasonably light, they're reliable, and subtle. They get the job done and I wouldn't hesitate to buy a second set.

they came stock on my attack track too. they're just standard factory road rims that you'll even find on some entry level bike shop roadies. I'm keeping mine for now (until they break I suppose). ~700 miles on them so far since trued them myself and s
still true.

I was wondering if you could tell me how you like the gravity attack? Pros/Cons? Also do you know how much the bike (complete) weighs as well as the wheels by themselves?

they are great rims and the ac hubs are nice too.

the machine builds on some are bad and they come out of true, was the case for mine. but they're really light, and all they really sacrifice is stiffness. they were strong as hell for me when i was on one.

My R450, which I use on the front, seems like it has a good amount of rigidity while I am riding (especially cornering). The only drawback is the ball-bearing Quando hub that came with it and the somewhat soft spokes. Even though the R450 is just a pin-jointed rim, I have been considering looking for a decent cartridge-bearing, alloy hub and swapping out with some DT Swiss spokes. The rim, itself, I have faith in.

If you're going to do all that why not get a nicer rim as well? You can always keep the your current wheel as a back up

Because I believe the R450 deserves better than the present hub and spokes. Maybe I'm wrong. Also, I just love projects. I am going to pop a Sun Eco on this rim (fifty bucks on ebay), with some DT spokes. that way, after about 500 miles, I'll be able to make up my mind about Alex. Then, it will become my spare.
