Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Many singlespeed bikes *do* have brakes. Many don't, due to track heritage (where brakes really aren't necessary) and the ability *when riding fixed* to slow down using one's legs if one is "cool" enough to do so. Surprisingly few of these brakeless fixies end up as protein smears on the underside of trucks, but you would be hard-pressed to describe riding brake-less as "safer".

Also, *le sigh*. At least I tried a reasonable response though.

The ones without brakes are the really good ones. Make sure you get one of those and not a cheap knock-off with brakes.

^Commendable (directed to deademeat)

They don't have breaks because they need to maintain productivity.

If one is foolish like me, I run a SS not a FG it only appears I don't have any brakes the rear is a coaster and I don't run a front like a dumby.

On one hand, coming from a perspective with no exposure to ssfg, it's a valid question.

On the other hand, there are stickies for questions like this.

On the other other hand, "Ask Scrod" would have been better than starting a new thread.

On the other other other hand, can we have a "no new threads before X amount of posts" rule?

Also, in b4 /thread.

For fixed gear bikes, it is technically not necessary to have a brake, because since your legs are directly attached to the drivetrain you can apply resistance in the reverse direction of forward pedaling and slow the bike down in that manner.

However when I get my fixie I will put on a front brake at a minimum, in case my feet accidentally get unclipped from the pedals. That could be very dangerous. Better safe than sorry, imo.

This just in, my sources tell me that 49.9% of the continental U.S. have outlawed brakes on bicycles in hopes of promoting the new feature film Premium Rush. This will in turn of course cause a total recovery from our current economic state.

Fact.

Seriously though, I may have overreacted. I'm fairly certain that my first post was starting a "hey guys, what bike should I buy?" thread, so I don't have much room to talk.

Bikes: good ones.

Some people ride brakeless because they think they do not need them.
Others ride with brakes.

I try not to use mine, but its nice to have in case of OH**** moments.
