Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

The DCC could ride like that if we wanted to, we generally seem to be more concerned with food though.
I don't consider running your hand along a bus too crazy... at least not on a freewheel. Neat shot though.
I've ridden fast through downtown traffic, but not going the wrong way down the street and stuff like that. And nowhere near as fast as these guys. The fixie rider in the Drag Race NYC vid has some serious skills, seeing him pull all those sharp turns around cars. Yikes.

I'm not trying to stir up a shi+storm in any way, but I had this thought on a ride tonight and I thought I'd share: Lucas always seems to be decked out in specialized gear. If he's a big specialized fan, I wonder if he'd ride a langster if he went fixed. Like I said, just a thought.

I never knew he was always decked out in Specialized gear, you never really see much more than just his handlebars in the videos... interesting

these videos can be bad for your health though if you are impressionable like me - I find myself on my commute now starting to ride like these guys

Shouldn't you be more concerned with beer?

I attribute finally getting to watch that video at work last night to my riding to the bar this morning. Getting onto Lyndale from downtown is a b!tch on a bike, but I was passing cars and then taking their lane...

Aren't you a little old to be imitating what you see on TV?

HOW?!!

How can anyone get through those gaps at that speed. It looked like he was completely above the cars. Levitating even!

You'd be surprised how people will make room for you when you're doing stuff like that. Most don't want to hit you at least as much as you don't want to be hit.

Excuse me. You're right. I rewatched the Maryland video and he does seem to be riding a red Lemond. (This pleases me. I ride a Lemond and love it.) I don't know what other videos I have seen, but I'm pretty sure I've seen plenty of Specialized gear. Maybe he just likes the gear or maybe I'm 100% wrong.

His camera is mounted in the side of his helmet (and might even be pointing at a slightly off angle), also it uses a wide(ish) lens so what you see on the video looks to be a lot tighter fit then the riders actual perspective....... errr I think?!

What really gets me is the guy in the black cape in the monster track video that nearly gets crushed between a taxi and another car.

Again I say, eh. As long as the cars are staggered like that, it's no big. When they're neck and neck, then you have to dodge mirrors (I've been known to duck though I've also been known to snag one or two with my bag--oops!). ANd there's definitely some lens distortion going on. Look at how those presumably true building walls seem to be canted off angle and how the cab has turned into some sort of yellow mink or some other kind really stretched out animal that's not very pleasant.

everything aside- distortion, staggering, etc- these guys are
taking nyc and sf streets like it's no big deal. i have bombed
down market before, through sf downtown, and so on, but
i'm forever in awe of the guys who do this on a daily basis...
i think these clips serve as "show & tell" to those of you who
don't live in big cities. trevor, i'd like you to put up some vids
of racing through boston- show 'em how it's done, kid

*shrug* I guess I feel like it's whatever. I mean I enjoy watching Lucas' videos, no doubt, but I also don't feel like there's anything superman going on here. I mean those dudes are real people just like the rest of us. I do stuff like that too, lots of times just on my way to and from work. I'm sure lots of people here do. It's cool enough to watch, sometimes more fun than actually doing, oftentimes less. But I don't know that it's worth getting all gaga over. You know?

And for what it's worth, I would shoot some vids if I had the most excellent helment-cam. But I don't, so I won't.

We should put together a fund for a Fix/SS Forum helmet cam that can be rotated between members so they can film their rides and link to them here.

Since most of us can't afford helmet cams, a communal one might be a good idea...
