Toe clips or pedal straps?

I usually commute to work with fancy leather shoes and I don't want to damage them while riding my fixed, do toe clips damage shoes? Should I go the pedal strap route?

ps: I don't want to carry a pair of sneakers just to commute :/

unless there are straps out there completely lined with lambs wool I think you're going to run the risk of scuffing your nice shoes using any real retention. I would suggest carrying your nice shoes and instead of sneakers wear some comfortable 2nd or 3rd string dress shoes. Something you won't mind getting a little scuffed but if your boss or whoever catches you in them at least you don't look like a complete **** wearing your adidas with dress pants.

and polish all of your dress shoes regularly of course.

and my vote goes for leather straps. Buckles could be an issue but at least then you don't scuff the toes of your shoes.

If your commute is short enough that you can do it in your dress shoes without messing them up, then it's short enough that toe clips won't make much of a difference. I'd just go with platforms and be done with it.

And as a result, will be seen at the office wearing scuffed shoes.

Leave your fancy shoes at work and ride with whatever pedal/shoe combo you want.

I'm very fond of mini clips. that's like toe clips without the straps.

Toe clips scuffed the **** out of the toes of my sambas, but pedal straps treat them just fine.
