Maybe!

Mumonkan 06-26-13 04:51 PM

how much should i spend on a used merckx corsa frame?

im aware the motorola and 7-11 colors are more desireable so theyre usually around $1000, think its feasible to get a "regular" one for around $500?

Somebody's looking for a reason to splurge on a Superstar cog.

My Gara is geared 49/18. Come take it out for a spin.

Same as my street setup. I love 49/18

TejanoTrackie 06-26-13 08:48 PM

I run 47 x 17 on my Rush, which very close to the same ratio. It seems to be just about perfect for me, and I've taken on some 50+ mile rides with rolling hills.

This jives with what I saw on ebay when I was looking for Merckxs, avoid the team colors if you want a deal. $500 may be a little optimistic since there are not many out there at once, especially in the most common sizes.

I'm not getting any hits on my track bike for sale here or craigslist so should I keep lowering the complete price or part it out to the flea bay? campy pista cranks and dura ace wheelset and vintage carlton frame.

Scrodzilla 06-27-13 07:27 AM

I honestly think the repaint/rebrand may be hurting you some. If it was in its original condition, I would have bought it before you recently lowered your price.

I watch vintage Raleighs on eBay all the time and know what they sell for. You'll have better luck on eBay.

craigcraigcraig 06-27-13 07:30 AM

ya I know. I would have preferred it scratched up and what not also. Should I keep it as complete?

Scrodzilla 06-27-13 07:57 AM

It may take a while on eBay but I think you'll make more money parting it out.

craigcraigcraig 06-27-13 08:17 AM

I'll attempt the whole bike first and see what happens to cut down on all the shipping work from my side.

Mumonkan 06-28-13 02:28 PM

im getting antsy. should i start accumulating parts for my classic road bike and put them on my fuji till i can find the right merckx?

yes. or else you will find the right merckx and have none of the parts, at which point you will become even more antsy. if you start now, you can be on the hunt for the best deals and save some money in the long run.

excellent point, now should i start with building wheels or group parts?

ameniste 06-28-13 06:03 PM

Kilo TT or Kilo Pro....already over budget.

craigcraigcraig 06-28-13 06:05 PM

group parts. they are more fun.

FakeFuji 06-28-13 07:57 PM

I love modern parts on an older frame

whatever deals you find and you can afford at the point. there's a lot that goes into a road bike.

hadaiwai 06-29-13 01:21 AM

Not done yet but I'll give it a shot and post up my build so you guys can tell me what I should do from here.

Usually in the "should i" thread, you give us some options. We don't just blurt out random junk.

That being said.. you should get some wheels and a chain probably.

You should buy wheels, tires, a chain, a cog, a lockring, pedals and bar tape.

And this:

Buy another steel bike or get aluminum?

I have a crmo geared Surly Cross check as my main commuting workhorse bike. I have a cheap hi ten fixie that I want to replace/upgrade. I have been thinking about getting a Kilo or something similar with a better light weight crmo frame but recently I have been thinking about getting aluminum to mix it up such as SST from BD or maybe build up a Leader or something similar. This would be more for fun rides and training rides with some of my road/tri buddies for a work out. Probably will never see the track regularly.

Well, if you don't yet have any aluminum frames then this is the time to get one. Just make sure to get a carbon fork for it.

seau grateau 06-30-13 03:37 PM

Nah, get at least two carbons for it.
