Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Should I use black or silver nipples for my next wheelset? Right now I have silver dura ace hubs and black spokes and black archetype rims. Would silver nips look weird with all the black?

Should I spend $1300 on a new track frame, because I know that the current track bike won't take me as far as I want to go and I can get a discount now... or wait?

what frame did you have in mind Jay? i would say $1300 for just a frame... it would have to be a pretty special frame with that price tag to justify it

Dolan DF4 (new iteration of the DF3), I'd be getting 30% off retail so I feel like I should do it now since I'll be upgrading at some point.

Alright thanks guys! For what it's worth, silver nipples are $6 cheaper than black nipples

Should I put on a freewheel on my old kilo, that way I have a single speed and a fixed gear rather than 2 fixed geared bikes?

Should I change my gear ratio? I'm running 46/17. There are hills and mountains even where I live but can I avoid most of them when I want to. When I ride my fixed bike I usually stick to flatter terrain and according to Strava I can get up to 30 mph with my current set up. But I feel slow especially from a stop. I am thinking about putting a 19 or 20 cog on the other side of my wheel so I have options. Worth the trouble?

How about flip flop with freewheel on one side and fixed on the other

Thats what I was thinking, but its a huge hassle to remove the wheel on my kilo, for some reason it requires almost 5x the force that my 725 needs just to get the rear wheel out.

But if I used a freewheel, I'd want to get brake levers like the ones that road bikes use. I still have my calipers somewhere in my room.

Are your seat stays bent? My kilo wheel requires no force to remove.

Sounds more like the dropout spacing is way off.

i wouldnt, but i feel like you can get more for less or at least less for much less. especially if you find a gem on CL that someone is trying to just get rid of

There is no way there is any quality control on that rim, and it will be a giant pain in the butt to build. Whats the goal for this wheel?
