New cheaper single speed line from bikesdirect

I just visited the bikesdirect track and single speed bike page and noticed there's a new line of more economical single speeds selling for under $250. Might be a consideration for someone wanting a SS on the cheap w/o having to resort to some of the other low quality bikes out there. https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/dawes/sst_steel.htm

How many times will they rename the Dawes "Baker Street"?

Halp, I need explaining again.

Also, it looks like the Gravity frame. Is this Dawes worth it?

The Gravity frame is aluminum. The Dawes is 4130 chromoly steel. I know nothing about it, but apparently Scrod does. Just looking at the pics and spec sheet it seems reasonable for the price.

I might recommend it to some friends with low budgets as a decent starter bike.

Dat seatpost!

Pretty soon people will buy these and start asking here how to retrieve a seatpost that completely slid down into the seat tube.

That seatpost would really piss off the crabon fibre crowd and I love pissing off the crabon fibre crowd.

What's wrong with the seatpost?

Why do the hubs say formula but not look like forumlas? Are they some new, low end model?

It's a super cheap seatpost where the clamp is separate from the post. Nothing wrong with it though.

Except that it's super cheap. And you thought a typical kalloy post would be the no frills standard. What's wrong with it is that there's a possibility of careless people accidentally through a chain of events getting the seatpost post part of it lodged in the seat tube. After all, the majority of people who do business with BD are less knowledgeable with bikes.

Bikes: everywhere

Easier to throw the saddle and seatpost in the trash at the same time!

I like the looks of it otherwise, kinda wish it had a curved fork tho. I love it when BD gives their decal dude the day off.

And Baker Street is a killer tune!

The whole seatpost disaster scenario is cracking me up! I've had a ton of bikes with a seatpin like that. Luckily never dropped one in, though - knock on wood.

Why even bother with the "track ends?"

Holy crap. I never in a million years would have figured that out. I assumed they stopped making that type of seatpost 30 years ago, those things are horrible!.

Formula doesn't only make one type of hub.

Not so fond of the compact frame, mainly for aesthetic reasons.

But I'm really drawn to that gold color. Looks like electric mustard.

Still glad I spent $50 more and got my Clockwork.
