Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bikes: Gravity Attack Track Bike

I bought a gravity attack about 6 months ago, and for about 5 months I rode 12 miles every morning, recently i started doubling my route. Since then I have decided that Alexrims R450's are the worst wheels in the world, and frankly, everything but the frame is pretty terrible. I've had to replace 5 of the back spokes, and I really need to invest in a new bottom bracket, i was thinking Tange, or a low-end Campy. I was looking at some Velocity Deep V's in white with black DT spokes (wouldn't buy anything that didn't already have DT), any thoughts? maybe some alternative options?

It's not the rim's fault. You should always have fresh-out-of-the-box machine built wheels stress relieved, tensioned and trued before riding on them.

I got a set for 50$(tires/tubes/cog lockring included) , and put them on my main boo, they survived getting hit by a car(after some serious smashing/truing), and 9 months of abuse afterwards, eventually the rear hub fully siezed while i was riding it(that's what i get for not repacking or even adjusting 10$ hubs), it had those same cheap formula loose balls, the whole drive side of the hub sheered off when i tried to take the cog after it siezed up. All in all 50$ well spent. You can't ask more than that from a chode wheelset off a chode bike. those hubs suck a lot of ass, ****ty, hairy ass. i'm sure you could make the hubs last a few seasons if you repacked them once a month, but who can be bothered with 10$ hubs it aint worth your time.

I did, and I know it's not the rims, but they didn't even come with DT spokes, I figure that if it costs 100 bucks to get them rebuilt I might as well get some more bomb proof deep v's with DT spokes and in a color that I want. I was thinking Velocity wheels, i want to get the REALLY deep v's but they dont come with machined sidewalls or a flip flop that can use a freegear, and i ride a really technical route so I need a freegear. Know of anything else that might work?

i suggest you stop worrying about if wheels have DT spokes or are bombproof. a well built/trued 32h rim laced 2x/3x should be fine, and the r450's should be the least of your troubles.

a fixed/fixed wheel can have a place to mount freewheels. weinnman dp18's are 110/set with sealed formula hubs, and can be ordered with machined sidewalls @ velomine.com.

Roni - you can mount a freewheel on a fixed hub without any problems. Also, DT Swiss straight-gauge spokes aren't really any better than generic straight-gauge spokes. Just sayin'.

Bikes: To many to list...

I am intrigued by this "new" line and in some ways its exactly what I want if I decide singlespeed is one of my keeper bikes. After owning a Gravity Swift for a few short rides and enjoying the upright compact geometry, but feeling the ride harsh I would like to try out one of these with similar geometry and steel that will ride nicer in theory. The price is pretty decent.
