I mean I know what a chainring guard is for but did know why that was only covering a small portion. The vid Hothead286 posted cleared that up for me, thanks.

New crank should be here any day ........ Im going from a 53t to a 48t, what should I expect to change in the ride? Harder or easier to pedal ..... or the same?

I've had these laminated leather straps for about 30 years now:

They actually have lasted longer than the pedals; the cage failed a couple years ago d/t erosion from my cleats, but the straps are still going strong:
