I've heard of some people doing cx-ray/race or laser/race nds/ds, but never cx-ray/laser.

It makes a wee bit of sense to use heavier gauge spokes on the drive side but there's absolutely no point to having bladed spokes on only one side of the wheel.

La vida loca.

oh you thought it was as simple as one whole side? hahahaha.

Nagrom_ 03-10-16 11:07 AM

I figured it would be every other spoke.

I still can't guess why.

Mumonkan 03-10-16 12:05 PM

not even that simple either

the why is because im ****ed in the head, but you should all know this

When you build wheels what do you use for a tensiometer? Do you use the Park TM-1? I've read in various forums that the TM-1 is notoriously for needing calibration out of the box, and is reads higher than the actual tension? If you have used the TM-1, what has been your experience in regard to its accuracy and reliability? If you don't use the TM-1, what tensiometer would you recommend?

Scrodzilla 03-14-16 09:15 AM

I use my fingers. After building a few hundred wheels, a tensionomter starts collecting dust.

Every now and again if I feel the need to double-check something, this is what I use. It's totally overkill considering how often I actually use it but it makes me feel fancy.

The TM-1 is probably fine for someone who isn't building wheels every day but I've never had to mess with calibrating one and keeping it accurate.

Hey Scrod,

I'm about to order an aventon mataro low frame. But I'm not sure what size I need because of the pursuit geometry (if that even makes a difference).
I filled in this thing Bike Fit Calculator | Find Your Bike Size | Competitive Cyclist as the sticky suggested. I'm 5'11" (1m80) and have an inseam of 2'8.7" (83cm).
This is what I got (I hope the measurements in feet and inches make sense, I'm European so I have no idea how it works):

top tube length: 57.3 - 57.7 cm (~1'10.5")
seat tube range CC: 53.8 - 54.2 cm (~1'9.2")
seat tube range CT: 55.4 - 55.9 cm (~1'9")
stem length: 11.7 - 12.3 cm (~4.6")
BB saddle position: 78.4 - 80.4 cm (~2'6.9")
saddle handlebar: 55.3 - 55.9 cm (~1'9")
saddle setback: 3.5 - 3.9 cm (~1.4")
seatpost type: not setback

Would you recommend a 55 or 57?

Cheers!

Scrodzilla 03-15-16 10:35 AM

The 57 has an effective top tube measuring 57.1cm, so that's what my recommendation is, especially if you plan on using a zero-setback seatpost.

Potatofarmer 03-15-16 10:59 AM

Not planning to use one of those. I just copy pasted what it said. :)
Would you still suggest a 57 with a setback seatpost?
I found that in most cases people of my height ride the 55. That's why I'm doubting.

Scrodzilla 03-15-16 11:09 AM

The 55 has an effective top tube of 56.2cm, which will be too small based on your calc results.

Potatofarmer 03-15-16 11:16 AM

Alright. Thanks for the help!

You could try your luck here:

It's in the EU though.

Do the MKS stainless toe clips share the same profile as the MKS deep toe clips or more like the normal?

They're closer to the deep clips.
