I used to live with my (now ex) gf on an Alpaca farm. The landlords owned the home and surrounding ranch; they sold the wool. They had one "guard" llama there to ward away coyotes and stuff from the alpacas. Compared to alpacas, llamas are large, ugly, slobbering beasts! But still cool.

Where was this ranch?

EDIT: SQ I accidentally edited your post, sorry about that. Oops!

Vista, CA, close to where my parents live and I grew up. The two of us meet after I returned home from college in 2011.

The farm wasn't like a big operation or anything, I think they only had one herd of animals. There was a lot of other agriculture and crops growing around it, hence my use of the term "ranch".

Vista eh? Did the flat grazing land butt up to a high steep mountainish slope/cliff with a road at the top?

TMonk 07-10-17 12:24 PM

The whole thing is on a gently rolling slope, sort of up on a plateau. It's on Buena Creek Road neat Twin Oaks Valley Road if you're familiar.

Ha ha ha ha. I'm very familiar. Might be the same place. Many moons ago my motorcycle buddy and I were on a brisk (:p) Saturday afternoon ride through there after abusing Palomar mountain. I had a disagreement with my front tire about how much speed I could carry through a particular corner. The tire won and off the cliff I went, ass over elbow. Sky-dirt-sky-shrubs-sky-weeds-sky-boulders-sky. When the bike and I finally stopped cartwheeling and came to rest on the meadow at the bottom, some llama-esque critters were staring at me, thoroughly unimpressed. I was fine, bike was hammered, $700.00 helmet saved my life but was ruined. Some young guys on quads rolled up and offered help. They helped me load the bike into their pickup truck and took me all the way home to Tustin for a tank of gas and a Benjamin. A flatbed tow would have been a fortune.

Silver Comet Trail, Georgia.

The longest continuous paved trail in the US.

Tim - curious to know how much pedestrian traffic there is on that trail. We have a decent MUP system here that sees a lot of pedestrian traffic which means people walking dogs, pushing strollers, joggers, in general people not paying attention to their surroundings. Looks like a nice trail there. Didn't see one pedestrian in your video however.

I like those tunnels. Not sure what it is, but I've always loved caves and tunnels.

Length rank. Not technically accurate. Silver Comet is 61 miles. The Chief Ladiga trail is 33 miles. They are connected for a total of 94 miles. Same railroad and trail though. Just funded from different sources and in two different states.

New to the number one slot is the Paul Bunyan trail in Minnesota. It has recently had some sections paved to complete the connections. 120 miles long. But.... it's also a combination of a few connected trails, the Heartland State and the Blue Ox.

The longest single direction, single name trail is the Little Miami in Ohio at 75 miles. And it's just a part of the Miami Valley Trails network. 340 miles of connected paved trail.

I thought Silver Comet/Chief Ladiga was the longest paved trail? It is fully paved all the way from Smyrna (Atlanta) to Piedmont, Al.

@TenSpeedV2, as expected, ped traffic is higher the closer one gets to Atlanta and on a Saturday afternoon can be quite heavy for 10 or 15 miles toward the west end. It is a great place to ride the fixed gear, people watch, stop for coffee, pet the dogs, etc.

The trail goes through some very remote areas west of mile 15 - state conservation land, wildlife management areas, etc. and very rugged. The armies during the Civil War couldn't operate there as it was too rugged. There will be a jogger or a kid on bikes near a trailhead but long stretches with only cyclists. What you see in the video is typical Saturday morning in the summer.

It really is a blessing to have the trail nearby. One can ride west for 10 miles, get off the trail and have endless country roads at their disposal.

Used to was. Don't be no more. :p

Paul Bunyan is paved, uninterrupted for 120 miles.

1. The NEW champion is the Paul Bunyan Trail which is a continuously paved trail from Brainerd, Minnesota to Lake Bemidji State Park in Bemidji

The portion of the Minnesota bike trail from Guthrie south through Laporte toward Walker is now paved and the segment from Brainerd/Baxter south to Crow Wing State Park was paved in July 2014–providing the final paved link. With the paving of these segments, the Paul Bunyan Trail now yields 120 miles of continuously paved MN bike trails from Crow Wing State Park just south of Brainerd MN to Lake Bemidji State Park in Bemidji Minnesota!

Exactly.

And that Miami Valley network is crazy too. All paved.....340 miles....all connected to one another.

Imma have to do the Paul Bunyan just because it exists...

TimothyH 07-17-17 11:56 AM

It looks like they have invested quite a bit in that trail. Good for Minnesota.

Given the short summers I'm sure they enjoy it. Do they snowmobile on it in Winter?

It's heavily promoted as a vacation destination for exactly that purpose. It's also maintained and groomed during winter.

Both links will provide you with comprehensive information so you can plan your Minnesota Snowmobiling Vacation with confidence. In addition to the miles available on the Paul Bunyan Trail, the Brainerd lakes Area boasts one of the upper Midwest’s premier snowmobiling destinations with 1,200 miles of networked trails radiating in every direction.

You certainly have some fun looking places to ride, your pics are always great. My wife is moving to atlanta for school in a few weeks, so I will be around town fairly often for the next few years. I might have to ask for some ride suggestions from you when I make it down there.
