Yeah I gonna say it's always good to have a tensioner when running SS imo. I've always wanted to a convert a modern road bike to fixed but that'd be beyond dangerous with the dropouts

If you're able to find the 'magic gear' it can work well. There is also the option of a eccentric hub as well.
