The only geared bike that will make you less tired is an ultra light weight one with the proper cassette and gearing choices which would run you into the thousands.
The only explanation I can offer you as to why your SS is making you less tired is there is less mass in the rear and overall drivetrain, which would only have an effect based on what kind of riding style you have.
Personally I like riding both, and either type of bike makes me tired in different ways - with the road bike I push harder, the single speed gives me a great workout overall.

Well I guess we can x out the weight. I can always carry less stuff. I'm really paranoid so I tend to carry a lot of crap.
If anyone from San Jose knows anyone selling a pretty good FG/ss then please let me know.
Thanks everyone for the help. I really appreciate it.

I know it sounds silly, but a few factors come into play here.
If you're trying to maintain a certain speed, regardless of gearing you are going to have to spin faster to maintain it, even in a different gear. Lighter would be better in this case.
I'd mostly be concerned about bike fit, tire size, etc. If he wants to go slower he can just pedal slower. His "mashing" and "spinning" are likely not all that different.
