Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Stupid question on "those things in the spokes"

Curiosity has got the best of me, and I'm sure this going to open a rash of quarky replies but here it goes anyways......
I have seen little cards or placards in the spoke of bike like in the SS/Fixie thread, and on ss/fixie galleries on the net. Is it some kind of track bike thing to put cards in the spokes? Don't see that on the trails down here in the Houston area. What is the signifance fo these placards (if any)? .Obviously they are not meant to make that motorcycle sound, since the card is not taped to the chainstay, or you don't have one of those Trubospoke things.

You should make a card that reads "I Don't Get These Things". It would be right up there with the Myspace image that reads "No Hipster Image Available". Hiliarity would ensue!

I seriously don't get them. They're right up there with stupid scooter rally patches for mods & studs/pins on leather jackets for punks. How many ya got?!

"I'm also addicted to boobies" would also be a good one. But let's stay on task!

Bikes: Various by application

I get them when I race. Or make them if I throw a race.

Come on, they jumped the shark before the "LiveStrong" bracelets. I'm actually realizing that the term "Jump The Shark" has well, jumped itself. Damn you Urbandictionary.com!!!

Why don't you make pre-race cup cakes? Who doesn't like cup cakes?! I mean, I'd rather have a cup cake instead of a spoke card.

Think outside of the box. People would be expecting to get a spoke card but you throw a curve ball. Instead of showing up with wine George Costanza wants to bring Pepsi & Ring Dings. Are you feeling me yet?!

"I show up with Ring Dings and Pepsi, I become the biggest hit of the party. People be coming up to me, 'just between you and me I'm really excited about the Ring Dings and the Pepsi' ".

I've only thrown 2 alleycats but each was quite original. Spoke cards aren't exactly expected at them, only half the races I've gone to in the past few years have them. As far as cupcakes go there is almost always food at the afterparty aand snacks near the start. Besides they're just a lil sumthin and cheap too. Way cheaper than cupcakes or Pepsi.

I think they look good done right. For instance I only put 1-3 in my spokes at any given time. 1 in the front-2 in the back or just 2 in the back or just 1 in the back. Too many takes away from the bike I think. Plus I can't have people stopping to read them all day, finding them between myself and my ride when I step back outside to get moving. Like right now I'm sporting my Seattle CMWC 03 in the rear, compliments my grungy ride nicely.
