Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

It was really bad. That's not to say I didn't enjoy watching it, but it was bad.

getting pretty good reviews. I usually agree with Ebert and he's giving it high marks for a fun chase movie.
I like the director. great writer and his other directorial efforts are solid.
Definitely checking it out, besides I'll watch any bike related flick just 'cause I love bikes!

I was hoping it had one liners in it or something. If it doesn't then it better have some good corny scenes to latch on to.
Any accidental freewheeling, brake levers, left side drivetrains or inadvertent bike changes like other movies?
I know his street bike turns into a trials bike in one shot.

I felt a little conflicted LOLing so hard at those points.

Re: the bikes -- I don't want to spoil too much of the plot, but his bike doesn't "change" into other types. I had to wonder if they varied the gearing on his FG between scenes so his cadence would look more "normal" throughout.

I think they did, in the opening scene it looked like he was in a pretty easy gear (small-looking chainring to me) but later it looked more normal sized. Then again changing the chainring is a stupid way to adjust gearing compared to changing the cog so maybe it was just me. Also no worries about spoiling the plot, cc700 has like THE major spoiler in his post. I'm glad I stayed away from this thread until after I saw it.

Anyway, I LOVED it but I didn't think it was a good movie, if that makes any sense. It was exactly what it needed to be - it was way overwrought/took itself too seriously in parts, but also was tongue-in-cheek and laughed at itself in other parts. It had GAPING plot holes. It had lots of shout-outs to bike kids. (like JGL and other dude racing in the park and blowing by the pack of roadie/freds. I LOLed.) The only part I hated was use of the term "flash mob" i mean COME ON you couldn't think of a less lame word/phrase to use to rally the kids?

I would recommend seeing it with a group of friends/pack of bike kids cause it's definitely a movie that benefits from some audience feedback. I saw the 8:00 showing and considered staying for the 10:40 one because I knew there was an alleycat that was ending at the theater for the later showing and it would have been fun to see with more bike kids in the theater. That said, the friends I went with ride bikes but are not bike kids per se and they still totally enjoyed it.

Stay past the first batch of credits, they show JGL bloodied for real after smashing through a cab window.

It will make some kids take off their brakes which is stupid, and it made me want to learn to skid which is also stupid.

what is stupid is that this movie made her want to.
what is stupid about skidding is that it's totally unnecessary.

It makes total sense. More than one review I read said that it was either the BEST bike messenger movie or the WORST, and they couldn't decide.

Same here. "Brakes are death!"

It is going to make fixies way too main stream, and make all the new riders remove their brakes and crash.
Popularity ruins everything fun..

see in my area they were popular with the kidz about 2 years ago so they have all moved off onto the next trend. Recently its the bug skateboards that serve no functional purpose at all.
