https://sheldonbrown.com/brakturn.html explains this very well, too.
To the OP, just a front brake is perfectly fine to stop your single speed bicycle promptly and efficiently, provided it does not fail. The risk is up to you.

I think it's funny when people try to build a logical argument around "meh, **** it." You had a SS with one brake, it felt sufficient and you said, "meh, **** it, I don't need another brake." But instead of just being one with that you gotta ramble on about how if you had a geared bike you'd really Go For the Gold and need two brakes and SS's are just for derpin' about on flat ground. Weird.

I find it funny that so many people get up in arms about single brake set-ups on freewheels while simultaneously riding brakeless fixed gears. Considering all this talk about braking effectiveness, wouldn't a single speed with a front caliper brake really be safer than a brakeless FG (a bike that effectively has one inefficient rear brake) and only nominally less safe than a FG with a front brake? If the rider doesn't know how to slow down effectively, the "braking" benefits of a fixed gear are basically null.
