NJS vs non NJS

To get specific

My friend is trying to sell me some used superbe pro cranksfor $100 (which usually go for $200 used). However, I am seeing same condition if not better omniums on CL for just a few bucks more. I'm leaning towards the omniums, but the NJS stamp... THE NJS STAMP!!!

I just want to know what to get, non NJS cranksets like miche and omniums look just as good as NJS, and I feel like I'm just paying for the NJS stamp and the craftsmanship(which doesn't necessarily mean better performance) when buying NJS stuff.

So tell me what you think, are NJS equipment really worth that much more money compared to non NJS?

Bikes: Several, mostly not name brands.

The NJS logo is not a designation of quality or craftsmanship, but rather a designation of compliance to an arbitrary set of standards required for keirin racing. It is meaningless unless you are a professional keirin racer.

swag yes, but as far as price goes...
DA > SSP > 75 >> Campy > Omnium > Miche

That's why I've got a campagnolo, best bang for the buck IMO.

You didn't really ask about performance at all and John gave a good answer.

They are top cranks. Choose which one you like more because you probably wont notice much difference in actual performance. The oversized BB spindle and external bearings of the Omniums is supposed to add stiffness to the system. Go for that if you want more "performance".

Although this is correct, is does not mean that NJS does not have quality standards. NJS parts are very quality, but that does not mean that non-NJS parts are of lesser quality. Personally, I like my Sugino 75's, but if I were starting over, I would go with Omniums.

Considering silver Sugino 75s are NJS certified but black and other colors are not, the stamp doesn't really mean much by the way of overall "performance".

Sounds to me like you're after swag points.

The NJS standards were set in the late 1950s, so with most things the parts stamped are pretty low on the perfomance level. They are nice, but will not perform like modern parts. There are three exceptions: bars, hubs, and cranks.

But with the bars and cranks things are changing. Parts like the 3ttt scattos and outboard bearings are making it so that in 5 years the NJS parts will fall the way of the Hatta headset and araya rims.

I just thought I'd chime in and say my old pair of black 75s were stamped.

Where are you getting your Campys cheaper than 75s? Campys are like $400 retail.

Oh please tell me why I bought my crankset, this should be good. Keep in mind I use them on my track bike and omniums on my street bike.

ˆˆˆˆthis and get a sealed BB from the campagnolo line like Chorus or even Veloce wich isn't hugely overprice as the record pista and you will be all set for an awesome crank+bb.

Both of my newer black sets (as well as the ones in the shop) are not stamped but my silver ones are.
