Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Snapped this as I was walking between classes...
Not exactly "jackass" exactly but riding fixed with no brakes or straps is just stupid.
I wouldn't even ride through Tally-Nasty without a brake and my friends think I'm insane!

[edit] Not sure why the picture showed up sideways...

That's pretty much all I see over here. 14 year old kids riding fixed gear, no brakes, and no foot retention. A few times I have even see brakeless single-speeds..

It's that high for safety. The more outstretched your legs are the more likely you're not going to land on your face when the rev - x explodes.

I gotta get a picture of it one day, but over here at CSUS there are a few people who i've notice who run singlespeed (i've seen them coast) and dont run a rear brake. I find that a little ridiculous, at least on fixed gear you can slow down or skid, but its just not the same on singlespeed. I've also seen fixed gear people run no foot retention and no brakes as well.

Pfft, we get lots of kids riding their bmx brakeless, but then again, kids are unkillable. Sadly, they also ride them, at speed, amongst heavy pedestrian traffic and pedestrians tend not to be as indestructible.

That's gotta be horrible, we get some people like that on campus which zip and zoom in between heavy pedestrian traffic. Do you have people who ride against traffic as well? and give you a dirty look when you're in "their" way. Cause I'm convinced that I have the majority here at CSUS, everywhere else i've been people follow the flow of traffic.

Sorry cobber, the US doesn't have a monopoly on dropkicks, it might seem as though you do but that's only because there are so many of you to start with. Watching some of the idiots around here, there are times when I despair for the human race (I have a fear that cats will win).

There are MANY times that I feel that I've lost faith in the human race more so since I've been biking, the endless stupidity of people who bike yet feel that they have no need to learn any sort of basic rules and feel exempt to all of them. (although I have ran a few stop signs, GRANTED no one was anywhere within site and it was in a neighborhood too.)

this could be cool though. but yah no tape + ridiculous seatpost height. i dont mind the spinergy. but its funny how the same exact parts on the same exact bike can go from porn to jackass in the matter of a few setup choices.
