I just struggled for 20 minutes to take off my crank arm......without taking off the crank bolt first. Gee, I wonder why that didn't work.

judging by the disc im sure this is on a touring bike in the middle of nowhere, but if you thought to bring bailing wire, why not extra chain?

cassette must look awesome after that, must shift awesome

johnnytheboy 05-07-13 07:40 PM

hopefully that's narrow wire.

gregjones 05-07-13 07:58 PM

I don't think that is bailing wire. It looks more like coat hanger.

Bailing wire---junk, temporary
Coat hanger---1st class, permanent

IthaDan 05-07-13 08:05 PM

... Or a barbed wire fence.

Could of been a mountain bike as well.

From experience I'll tell you that when you break a chain in the middle of nowhere, you will go to extreme lengths to repair it. I didn't have bailing wire, but I was able to pound the chain back together with an Allen wrench and a rock. Now I carry a chain tool.

Why would you have a pair of tin snips, but not a chain breaker?

You don't. But the farmer living on the hill is far more likely to have a pair of snips than a chain breaker.

I'm impressed by the knotting. Looks like a boy scout or a sailor fixed that chain.

Dunno about bowline.

Around the tree and down the hole?

Its a great knot. Can't untie it by pulling, but one little push and it's free. Guess it would be the knot of choice for repairing a chain.

Narrow 8,9,10 speed chains with mushroomed pins don't take we'll to being re-joined by pushing the pin back in. That could have been fixed with a spare master link though.
