Yep. I think it's kinda cool. Context behind this was that it was receiving criticism for being too much of a "skateboard" helmet, so they brought this dude to a skatepark and he rode a cervelo around.

Not to derail this riveting thread too much, but what helmet is it?

Giro Air Attack.

New aero road helmet idea. Similar to what's been used on the track for a while, I think they just improved ventilation.

SpeshulEd 05-16-13 08:40 PM

Yeah, there are vents in the front to push the air over your head. Supposedly works pretty well. These helmets are everywhere in the giro d'italia this year. Personally, I like them and they seem to be great sellers so far, I feel a a big shift in helmet design is on its way.

I hate when someone decides everything needs to change for no reason other than marketing

if it aint broke dont fix it.

Um? They're a hell of a lot more aerodynamic. That isn't marketing. These things are saving more watts than aero wheels and frames.

GMJ 05-16-13 10:01 PM

I don't know. It seems like the Giro is trying to bridge the gap between modern sprinter's helmets and traditional road helmets.

http://spokeydokeyblog.wordpress.com...r-attack-data/

5 watts at 25 mph, 44 watts at 50 mph

Unless you're sprinting, the difference won't be huge, much less noticeable to freds like myself.

http://www.casco-schutzhelme.de/en/p...category_id=41

God these look beast. Probably absolute hell (ventilation) for anything less than a sprint though.

Nagrom_ 05-16-13 10:10 PM

I'd guarantee they weren't designed for the general public.

When Zipp 808s save 32w at 40mph, these helmets make a big difference.

I doubt a helmet is gonna be the thing that gets someone the podium in a race, thats all im sayin

And I'm saying, it definitely can be. When races are won by fractions of a second, why would you not use something that would benefit you?

Not racing bikes + Not buying fancy helmets = I DGAF

gregjones 05-16-13 11:07 PM

Once the limits of the human factor have been reached it comes to equipment.

At the top of any sport it can be incredibly expensive to gain an edge. A $300 helmet sounds cheap in that situation.

But, there is a place for it....just not on my shelf.

Muffin Man 05-16-13 11:21 PM

It's actually only a $240 helmet with the shield option. So its relatively cheap.
And based on the marketing stuff, it uses the same airflow channeling techniques as the specialized helmets do now, and those work really well, so I actually wouldn't think ventilation would be too much of a problem.

My helmet was like $200 less than that. I dunno. I don't really wear it most of the time anyway.

SpeshulEd 05-16-13 11:46 PM

Personally, I think it looks better than the ones with all the giant air vents. I'd totally get one but I just bought a nice helmet.
