Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I need advise please!!! Newbie with fixies

I am new to fixies (fixed gear bikes) now I have stock tires and stock gears (cog and sprocket) so basically in riding a 40t front x 17t on back.and it's incredibly hard to skid. My question is; If I wanna skid stop easily and ride comfortably and well....fast. What gear ratio should I have? Also one that will give me the most life on my tire.

That is a ridiculously low gear.

There are two possibilities for your inability to skid:
1. It's a singlespeed.
2. You're a weenie.

Bikes: good ones.

He meant there's a chance you're confusing a freewheel with a fixed cog.

Foot retention is pretty much a requirement to skid. Unless you're doing sw8 leg overs.

Does your bike coast? If so, it's a single speed, not a fixed gear.

Ok let's see If I'm correct; a freewheel is when the wheel keeps rotating even when you don't pedal right? And a fixed cog is when the pedals don't stop turning and you have to keep pedaling... Right?
And by foot retention you mean pedal foot straps?

Are you sure about that? Even I could skid with that gear ratio, even if I was running a...35c tire.

Don't worry about skidding and having the longest possible tire life. In most cases it's one or the other.
But if you must, here is a link for gear ratios/skid patches...

Addendum: You are indeed new to this, so hang out, read the stickied threads/links, and do not worry about skidding. Just ride your bike.

Lean waaaaay over the front tire, then lock your legs with reckless abandon.

Another thing is.... I don't have foot pedal straps. Would that help more? An make it easier to skid stop?

I see a lot of people skid super easily even just sitting down that's why I asked. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Save yourself a lot of money and hassle by not skidding.

Maybe that'll help. Good luck, and like others have said, just keep riding. Experience is your friend.

Bikes: BMX, fixed gear

I just put a rubber band around my pedal/shoe. And whenever they break, we have a million more at work that I can snag. Perfect system.
