I know a lot of you dig the old-school track esthetic. I, however, am a much bigger fan of new-school stuff. Give me aluminum, carbon fiber, clean welds and curves over lugs, etc. I'm trying to put together a list of the more techy, next-gen type (read: probably not steel, no lugs, "ugly" to old-school fans) track framesets out there. Production-models, specifically (no 1-off types).

So far I've got:
  • Cervelo P2T (discontinued?)
  • Bianchi Pista Concept
  • Planet X track frameset
  • Pinarello Monello
  • Specialized Langster Pro
  • Cannondale Major Taylor
  • Corima Cougar
  • Felt TK2

I know I'm missing a bunch. Help me out?

I think LOOK frames are about as non-traditional as you can get. Dig that unique hinge-style integrated headset!

Merckx Pista frames have tig-welds and oversized tubing, I think.

On the low-end of the cost spectrum, the Spicer custom aluminums have that thick, flat downtube.

Anyone mind explaining the interest in these new school bikes? Seems like if I wanted that, Id go and get a full on road bike? I know it's all just different peoples preferences, just curious to hear from a different perspective. Oh and I saw a pretty sweet techy looking frame at the velodrome, think it was called a FLASH.

I can help you out FDave. I'll hold your head underwater. That will get rid of this ugly 'techbike' fetish of yours :)

Which makes me wonder all the more why I forgot about it when I made the thread. :p

Goodthing I have my invisible gunship with well-trained howler monkey crew to keep me safe from you.

I can't really explain why I like the new-school stuff over the old-school stuff, but I do. Sort of fits the same esthetic that makes me obsess over electronic music, avant garde films, cyberpunk literature, and staying up for two and a half days at a time.

dave- how about this bridgestone at business cycles?

absntr 02-17-05 08:43 AM

I like all frames. From the modern look to the classic look. I currently ride a Pista but before that rode two road conversions, lugged and beautiful. I can appreciate modern track frames (I like Cannondale and the Pista Concept) but I also love the look of Gan Well, Cinelli and more.

The middle of the road is that clean look (Pista, KHS, Surly, Soma, etc) - no lugs but slim tubing.

My next ride will undoubtedly be a custom ride, preferably lugged - I'm looking at a Circle A or a Jonny.

That thing is dead sexy. I wish I could swing the cost of entry. :)

Why are so many people b*tching about this thread? This is not the 'Lugged Steel Fixed Gear Brakeless Clips'n'Straps Forum', it's the Fixed Gear and Singlespeed forum. That constitutes ALL forms of fixed and SS, even coaster brakes and BMXs if anyone wants to talk about them. If they do, leave 'em to it. At least it's on-topic, unlike all this Pie and Stash Pockets crap, and the tattoos thread. If you don't like tech frames, that's fine, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but don't waste your time and others by telling everyone about it.

For the record, I love steel, I have a lugged steel bike and two tigged steel bikes, but I also love carbon hi tech stuff, like the Lotus Sport bike (Boardman's bike), the Aussie Superbike, the UK Sport bike, the Kogas that the Dutch team ride, and all that jazz.

the 1" headtube is what does it for me- er, inadvertently. it's actually the nitto qill that does it for me.
this asymetric yamaguchi is another fine example of a techy frame utilizing the 1" headtube.

Mmmm. I must be more old-fashioned than I thought, 'cause when I looked at that yamaguchi, alls I could think was, "What the bloodclot?!"

Fugazi Dave 02-17-05 09:55 AM

The Yamaguchi just doesn't look right with that Brooks on it...

bostontrevor 02-17-05 09:59 AM

Yoinks! I don't usually dig a super-tweaked frame, but that Yamaguchi's actually pretty cool. I think I could be into that.

Don't forget the super swoopy Koga-Miyata'a ridden by the Dutch Team.

honduraz10 02-17-05 11:49 AM

ive got a friend with a felt tk2. that thing looks sweet-maybe like the batmobile? :)

Judah 02-17-05 12:00 PM

Check out Don Walker he's got some oversized techy looking frames: http://www.donwalkercycles.com/Webpa...ges/Track.html

All fillet-brazed steel...

Edit: This one has very similar geometry to mine(mine's smaller though): http://www.donwalkercycles.com/Webpa...k/Lugless.html

ink1373 02-17-05 12:12 PM

the wheelbase on that asymmetrical yamaguchi is great.
