today I am again realizing how much "stay-cations" rule. haven't worked since the 20th, half through the 2nd of Jan off.

riding, drinking, hanging out with the sis, going out, lazing around my parent's beautiful yard.. all at my own damn pace, as slow or fast as I want.

love Small Bar.

that place + OK Cupid got me laid once. The burritos at El Zarape right there are no joke, either.

Scrodzilla 12-27-13 02:59 PM

El Zarape and Pizzeria Luigi have become regular lunch spots. We're stoked about the whole area.

Be sure to keep tabs on the shop's fb page. We're planning one hell of a grand opening party in January!

Read this five or six times wondering what any of that had to do with chemistry.

TMonk 12-27-13 03:04 PM

"staycations"

for some reason I thought that hyphenating it would make it look less like a chemistry thing, lol. stupid

I think because when I was thinking about the correct spelling, I thought of it as a sum of "stay" and "cations" in my head.

wipekitty 12-27-13 06:38 PM

Today I went to the bank without a ski mask for the first time in weeks.

TMonk 12-27-13 08:17 PM

Jaytron 12-27-13 08:53 PM

We're trying to convince my work to open up a satellite office in San Diego. I'd totally move.

Dannihilator 12-27-13 09:38 PM

Today I put in yet another 42 miles.

nelsonfung21 12-27-13 11:29 PM

Today I was riding 20km long to buy a used nitto b123 for a good deal. Sadly I had to wait for my another stem to come because I didn't want to waste the bar tape of the previous handle bar.

I bought it for $40

Today I visited my LBS where I bought my last geared road bike nearly 10 years ago and saw the same dude who sold it to me. We started talking about me getting my first ever full carbon road bike, because my old aluminum road bike rides really rough on our Texas chip seal country roads and my new Ti framed bike is a bit heavy. I wanted to see the new Cannondale Synapse, but he said "dude, the Cervelo R3 is so much better." Anyway, he's going to build up an in-stock 2014 48cm with 105 on it so I can ride it to see if I like it, and if I do he'll get me the Ultegra 11-speed model. I'm so excited, I'm gonna asplode.

sweet.

I think the R3 is a great choice for a daily driver, long ride kind of bike.

Huffandstuff 12-29-13 06:46 PM

Did a quick 20 due to boredom and thought I was old and slow, turned out I got like 3-4prs and ninth overall on two different spots and 5th on another. 48x17 for days.

So, do you agree with the sales dude at my LBS that it's a better choice than the Cannondale Synapse Carbon. Cervelo claims that this bike has been raced in Paris Roubaix, which has Pave, so it should be good for Texas chip seal. I don't plan on racing it, just long 100+ Km rides on rough country roads. My only concern is that it might not have room for 28mm width tires, which the Synapse definitely does. Anyway, I should find out later this week when I can ride one.

TMonk 12-30-13 11:46 AM

Well I don't have personal experience with either bike so my opinions aren't worth a whole lot.

My liking towards the R3 is because many of the locals rode them where I went to college (Humboldt Co. Ca.). These guys were tough and used to what was new for us college riders: long slogs through the mountains with poorly maintained (or no) pavement roads.

The synapse seems a little "fredly" to me, which is totally subjective I guess. FWIW I've never known anyone who owns one. The headtubes are obnoxiously tall IMO, too tall to be suitable for the kind of riding that I do.

With the relaxed geo (relative to the Cervelo) and room for beefier tires, the Synapse may be a better choice. That's your call though, obviously. The R3 def. seems like more of a race bike to me, which is probably why I am drawn to it. I've thought about obtaining an R3 for my training bike for a while, but now I'm thinking a Ti frame.

Interestingly, the geo in the smaller sizes is very similar. For example, the 48cm R3 has a 70.5 deg head angle with 53mm fork rake, whereas the 48cm Synapse has a 70.8 deg head tube angle with 50mm fork rake. What I like about the R3 over the Synapse is that the seat angle is somewhat slacker at 73 deg vs 74.6 deg, resulting is a longer effective TT length and a saddle position farther back from the cranks, so I think the R3 will be a better fit for me. Basically, I want the responsiveness of my old aluminum road bike w/o the harsh ride. I think that if I can stuff a 700x28 at least in the rear of the R3, I can live with that, but maybe I'll find that a 700x25 is plenty. If I want to ride on a lot of dirt or gravel, I'll just take my Ti Colossal, which currently has 28s and has room for a 32mm in the rear.

TMonk 12-30-13 12:28 PM

Ah - good point. I knew that you rode smaller frames but looked strictly at the 54 size when comparing dimensions.

What is your wheelset going to be? I feel like a decent tubeless wheelset + 25s will get you most of the comfort and reliability you're looking for.

The stock wheelset is a Fulcrum Racing 5.5, which are the Cervelo specific version of the Fulcrum 5. I don't think they are tubeless ready, but am not especially keen on going tubeless anyway. The reason for going wider than 25mm is to handle the occasional forays on gravel/dirt roads or really bad roads.
