What kind of crank?
Many cranks can be tightened with a 8mm hex wrench, something that can fit in your saddle bag.

I learned this lesson one misty, wet morning in college. I was doing 3x15' intervals on a local climb, about 8miles out of town in the boonies. Fortunately I only pedaled about 1mi one-legged until some nice locals with a pickup gave me a ride to town.

They're sugino rd2 cranks. They can be tightened with the 8mm wrench, which I keep in my Chrome bag. Unfortunately I've been having some shoulder pain lately, and opted for my backpack this morning, forgot that I had no tools in there, and was out of luck.

Tightened down really well now. Debating some loc-tite. Also considering changing cranks, this has happened twice and while I didn't use a torque wrench for my first install, they were tight without over-tightening to the point of cracking something.

You can't properly tighten cranks with just a hex wrench. You may think they are tight enough, but they are not. You need to tighten them to about 400 in-lb (33 ft-lb), which requires a torque wrench. Using loctite is unnecessary, and won't maintain the pre-torque. I have Sugino RD2 cranks on three of my bikes (one is a geared double), and have never had any loosening problems with them.

I didn't know this, I appreciate the info. I'll have to borrow a torque wrench from my dad and give that a go.

Tejano is right on. I consider myself to have a good "feel" when tightening fasteners. Lord knows I stripped and broke enough in my youth. So I had plenty of experience with that moment of "Gone too far" feeling. But I learned from my mistakes. When tightening crank arm bolts the first time with a long handled 3/8ths inch ratchet, I was SURE I was approaching a bolt head failure. I was confident the head was going to shear off. And on the Drive side it felt like the arm hole was going to split. Well, I grabbed the torque wrench and I wasn't even close yet. I was at 23 ftlb on a crank that called for 30ftlb. I kept going, sure I would snap something, but they took it.

The 8mm will get you home, which is why you keep it in the bag.

You can tighten them proper when you get home, or at the LBS.

Today I found out while trying to pump a tire that wouldn't fill that I need to have my wheel retrued. I haven't ridden my bike in a week.

Don't take offense to this because I had a friend who did it (he is completely new to cycling). Did you back out the presta valve screw to open up the valve?
Wheel truing is usually $10-20 at a shop so its not too big of a deal.

"back out?" You mean like unscrew the tip? Yeah I did that, it was filling but once I turned off the compressor it went empty.

yea, unscrew it. hmm, its odd that it would be empty. If it was a leak it would at least of some pressure in the tire when you take the pump/compressor off.

i have a moron moment and do that sometimes myself, or sometimes crud gunks up the works and you simply get the damn things unscrewed (winter blows)

also make sure you break the seal on the valve by just pushing it in so you get a pop or hear air escaping, cuz sometimes them ****s just glue themselves shut

Yeah, what I'm really not getting is that the whole rig is less than a month old and basically new. I'm getting my wheel retrued tomorrow so I'll just get it looked at then.

You need to have the spoke tension balanced and then trued. If you dont have the tension fixed then your wheel will soon go out of true again.

Today I once again attempted to loosen a stuck stem. Once again, the bicycle has gained the upper hand.

If it's a quill stem try tapping the top of it with a hammer (cushion the blow with wood or cloth) or mallet to get the wedge to release from the steerer tube.

It has been tapped. And tapped harder. And tapped quite violently. Still won't budge. Penetrating oil has been tried. Next I guess is some PB Blaster or the boiling water trick I read about on here somewhere. If all else fails, I will start drilling from the bottom in an attempt to destroy enough of the wedge to release the stem.

I had to use heat and a 18" pipe wrench to get my seatpost out of my kilo, it was seized with gunk. I know heat expands metals but sparingly using a blowtorch helped to loosen some of that crap.

It doesn't feel so good to be back in LA. Why is everything so damn far away!?

USPS delivered my registered package of bike loot to the wrong house today; somebody's getting fired or heavily reprimanded.

today i traded in my Turbo for a Supercorsa. so far I'm liking it although it is definitely firmer.
After a couple years my turbo was slowly developing the profile of a supercorsa, so i figured i'd give it a try.

Today (yesterday, really) I found out all I needed was a new tube and that made me happy. I got it after I went to register for this school year and ended up carry a metric ****ton of textbooks with me everywhere in my. Chrome mini metro so my back was dying since I had around 15-20 pounds on it and my right shoulder is still recovering. After I got my new tube I decided to head over to the Chrome Hub to look at some bags (the people who work there are awesome, shoutout to Hannah for being super rad and shoutout to the other white dude as well) and I tried putting all my stuff in a Citizen and Barrage and it felt beautiful…too bad I'm ****ing broke. After I left I rode around nonstop downtown for close to three and a half hours which made me find out several things I hate about people, like those who take forever to close their door that's open right in the bike lane, a lady did that today which started a chain reaction which eventually led me to smashing my dick on my stem. Afterwords, I went home because they don't allow bikes on the red line until 6. And then I rode home after taking my busses after the train and then biked home. My entire body is killing me as a write this and I'm just pretty much done with the world at this point.
