Totally man. My kilo was nothing special, but it had decent components and looked really nice imo. It was stolen the second time I locked it up somewhere. Luckily I got some of it back, but I learned my lesson. My new ‘beater’ build is gonna be pretty slick too, but I’m gonna tone it down some and make it inconspicuous to the untrained eye. Gonna start double locking bikes too. I just picked up a kryptonite chain lock cuz the bastards obviously destroyed my old U-lock and I’ll also run a cable lock. Nothing will prevent a theif if they want something bad enough... aside from a .45 to the ass... but every deterrent helps.

On a side note, I just locked in my booth at the local bi-annual bike swap coming up in mid April. It was kind of a last minute decision, but pulled the trigger. I’ll be selling some stuff, but mostly promoting a new business venture in custom engraving, custom one off parts / mods, and custom builds for the bicycle world. Mainly focused but not limited to the fixed gear and track bike consumers. It’s gonna be a hustle the next few months to get cards / stickers printed, example products ready, but I’m excited! My best friend is a ridiculously talented tattoo artist and I’m having him make me a banner to hang. My go to bicycle homie has a repair shop who I’m going to approach about a possible display in shop, I’m even looking into developing a relationship with a local fitter that will be mutually rewarding. I’m also doing a lot of research into frame building, which has been a goal of mine for quite a while.

There has been some talk about building a velodrome here in Tucson for the past couple of years, and if everything takes off the way I hope it does I’ll be heavily promoting and fundraising for that in the near future. I have extreamly high expectations and motivation for 2019 to say the least.

I hear that. Before I rode fixed, I had my road bike stolen while it was chained to the wall inside my locked garage...

Now that I have some stuff on my bike that is worth stealing, I stick my bike in a locked closet at work and take it up to my apartment at night. I do leave it locked up when I run errands but that's only for like 20 min at a time, usually during daylight and in crowded places. I take every reasonable precaution though (anti theft bolts, bike chain the seat to the frame, ulock on the frame and back wheel, cable to front wheel).

I've got an eye out for a new frame so once I get one I may just plop all my unused parts onto the current frame to make a beater that I can abuse and lock up without getting stressed. Speaking of which, if you're gonna get into frame building any time in the near future, I'd be glad to take a first draft off your hands!

Sounds like a pretty awesome year you got commin man. I'm finally starting med school next fall after over 3 years in the workforce so hopefully my year will go well too.

I need someone to talk me out of selling my Steamroller for a Dolan FXE

bmwjoe 02-06-19 09:46 PM

I was riding home tonight in the late dusk and this dude pulled alongside of me in a minivan, rolled down the window and shouted "Those lights are the best!" Nice way to end the day.

Ride safe,

Joe

^^ Curious to see where this thread goes now that we've introduced a gun and (what I have to assume that fleshy colored mesh wrapped thing is) *****. Should be fun.

We're taking seven guys to Roger Millikan criterium, our first race of the season, and 5-6 of us are faster than most of the field and capable of rolling a solid breakaway. We will constantly be on the attack until something sticks and if not, three of us (including myself) are fast finishers in a sprint situation.

We're the team to beat! This should be fun, I can't wait.

There's a Lemond Tourmalet 853 near me that's making me want to sell my Steamroller.

idk man.... I’ve always wanted a steamroller... if I had one it would be hard to let go!

It's my second Steamroller (first was stolen). Great bike for sure, but I don't own anything with gears.

Gears are for.....

...people who like more control over their cadence. As for me I'm just a sissy and try to avoid pushing a gear at low RPM

After my ride tonight I mocked up this super clean ‘86 Schwinn High Sierra frame. Gonna hit it hard,
hopefully build a set of wheels and start assembly tomorrow.

It's amazing how deceiving that initial image is lol. Or perhaps my mind is just stuck in the gutter. Actually, the latter is probably the more likely answer. Carry on, good sir...

Today I didn't get my new wheels. The rims are still back ordered. :crash:

Today I went to the big boy's ride. 56 miles with 2500 ft climbing @ 18.4 MPH. They told me that was a "Mellow winter pace."

Today I did more work in the workshop getting it ready.

Leukybear 02-12-19 12:31 AM

Found a Rapha bus-ad today.
Was neat to see a cycling-specific ad but the product being advertised is meh.

I lost a race last weekend, but still scrounged some points (Roger Millikan Cat 3 - 50 min). Attacked hard with ~20 min to go and got clear. Four others bridged up ~2 laps in to my solo move and we held it. I really drove the break hard. Hesitated on the back straight of the final lap (smh) but held on for second. Long version here if you're interested.

TMonk: Cranks are in the wrong position and valve stems aren't properly aligned LOLOLOLOL! Congrats on 2nd that is better than third and way better than everyone else (aside from first) holding a break that you started is always a good accomplishment.

I saw my friend play in a local big band jazz outfit (he is a trumpeter) and it was excellent. Haven't in the past been a big fan of big band but I am slowly but surely warming up to it.

bmwjoe 02-12-19 10:07 PM

I ran into a little ice on the way to work.
