How bad is it to lace a used rim to a new hub?

As you may have seen from my other post, i have grenaded a hub but have an otherwise useful (still true/round etc) rim. I'd like to reuse it and lace it to a new hub because i'm cheap and also because i will probably have trouble finding a replacement that matches what i have now.

Two LBSes have told me this is a bad idea, one saying they just wouldn't do it because i wouldn't be happy with the result and the other telling me they could, but don't recommend it.

Wheelbuilders wanna weigh in?

IF the rim is round and straight, there is no problem with reusing it. But we are just going by your word that it is.

Truing and tensioning a bent, flat-spotted rim can be a nightmare.

What the hell is wrong with the bike shops in your area? As said above, unless the rim is mangled it's perfectly okay to re-lace it to a new hub.

Someone asked if i was telling the truth about the trueness/roundness of my wheel. Here's a youtube clip... i have not touched the rims since december in any way but you can see it's slightly out of true. I have no truing stand so i held a pen point up to the rim so you can see the runout. What say you? (sorry for the autofocus going in and out.)

My son just told me to make sure i wore my "bike watch" (RoadID) tonight in case i "get off the sidewalk.. i don't like you riding in the road... wear your bike watch in case you get hit by a car. Then you will be dead." Future troll is successful.

Does it clear the brake pads? If yes = "no worries."
