Aventon Mataro?

http://aventonbikes.com/

Has anybody heard of these? After spending too much time googling, I haven't found a review or forum post. They look fairly legit, but I was wondering if anybody has actually ridden one that can tell me about it. For 350 w/ free shipping (http://www.citygrounds.com/aventon/a...-frameset-3075) this seems a little too good to be true. From the Aventon website, these are hydroformed, hand polished, and hand welded aluminum bikes. But still, for only 350? There's gotta be a catch.

Nagrom_ 06-11-13 09:05 PM

Whoa. Those look nice.

Aluminum fork though, luckily its a crappy rake that I would replace anyway. Great price too.

willy704 06-11-13 09:10 PM

Ya, they look pretty slick. I might jump on it when I have the money. It looks like a $1500+ frame. This frame looks way too good for 350.

uuhh... nah, it looks like a solid 350 dollar frame. Looks almost better than the Langster Pro, and they both share stupid road forks.
Other than the 45mm rake fork, it has some pretty nice geometry, and accepts a standard seat post.

Literally the only thing I don't like is the aluminum road fork. Swap it for a carbon track fork and the thing looks solid as hell.

double sided track end inserts too, **** me.

Better?

Absolutely. Just don't expect a 1500 dollar frame, haha. Expect a 350 dollar frame and be impressed.
This looks on part with Al Leaders and the Langster Pro.

This is added to my list of Kilo replacements.

bonus points if it has removable decals.

I can dream about paying 350 for a 1500 dollar frame, right?

Sure.

Anyway, it looks like a great frame for the price. I'd like to see some reviews, and others' opinions on it.

willy704 06-11-13 09:40 PM

I was just looking at their FB page and found that the frames were only released a few months ago which would explain the lack of reviews/opinions.

Scrodzilla 06-11-13 10:22 PM

I know a little bit about where/how those frames are made and personally, I wouldn't ride one if it was free.

Fun fact: the "smooth welds" don't look like that in real life.

TejanoTrackie 06-11-13 10:33 PM

I paid $51 for my VISP, which is prolly comparable to that frameset. I wouldn't pay $350 for a VISP. Note that they don't mention its weight. I'll bet it's a boat anchor just like my VISP.

willy704 06-12-13 10:04 AM

I sent them an email. They said that the framesets (frame+fork+headset) are about 5 lbs. Have any of you guys actually seen or ridden them? I'm still sorta interested. From all of the pictures I've seen, those welds look pretty damn smooth.

Did you read my post?

CyclingDaily 06-12-13 10:32 AM

Looks like a Aventon branded visp to me.

Like I said, a boat anchor.

seau grateau 06-12-13 10:54 AM

Did they actually say "about 5 lbs"? If I made frames, I imagine I'd be able to give a more precise figure than that to people who asked about my product.

Leader says 4.0 - 4.7 pounds for their 735 frame.

A 300 gram range is just as bad, if not worse, than "about 5 lbs".

willy704 06-12-13 11:25 AM

Meh, I'd still like to see it in person

Yes I did. I'm not trying to say that this is the best frame evar, and I'm not gonna jump and buy it now; I was just making my own observation.

Don't let other people' opinions discourage you, buy it if you like it.
I would say wait a little until people starts writing reviews on that frame, then if you see good reviews, why not try it out! :thumb:

Care to expand on this part? In the interest of full disclosure, that is.

FWIW (not much) they are currently the frame sponsor for WolfpackA.

5lbs is ridiculously heavy for a (non-steel) track bike, though.

Nagrom_ 06-12-13 01:26 PM

Crappy aluminum fork and headset probably weigh 900g.
A quality carbon fork would easily cut a pound off the weight.

I'm not at liberty to expose the whole industry's dirty little secrets. I was simply stating my opinion based on what I know and have seen.

I respect your confidentiality, I would just like to see the frame first hand or see a reputable review of it before I judge the frameset.
