Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Two gears in the front fixed in the back

I want to convert a ten speed road bike into a fixed gear. i was wondering if the front two chain rings could stay one and function. if that is so what size chain should i get? or is this just crazy wrong and i need a new chain ring?

many thanks
Bongo

The chain needs to stay tensioned, so if you made the chain fit for the big ring soon as you shift to the small ring it would be super slack and fall off when you try and backpedal or go over the slightest bump

Bikes: good ones.

I've seen rear derailleurs rigged up to act like chain tensioners. Its possible, isn't it?

that is what i was thinking on doing. but for some reason the teeth on the rear gear don't mesh very well with the chain. what do?

You cannot use a chainstay-mounted tensioner on a FG, nor can you rig a rear derailleur to do the same. In short, it ain't happening without 2 chainz buddy.

The only way youre gonna actually shift on a fixed gear is with an IGH, you can have multiple cogs in the back but you gotta stop and wrench that into fruition

Why use two gears when you can use two propellers?

Wow......you make it sound erotic. I find it messy. Wait.

Anyway, I like my dingle cog.

Relevant only because of two speed feature.

With a direct drive like that you cannot run fixed. You pedal in one direction for one gear ratio and in the reverse direction for the other ratio.

Fixed gear with more than one ratio - talk to your friends at Sturmey Archer about their S3X hub - dingle cog which I believe (and may be wrong) can't be changed on the move - flip flop hub (which shouldn't be changed on the move) - go to SS. I think thems the options.

The dingle cog has to be worth a try, especially if you have a good quality quick release on the back (it HAS to be good, otherwise use nuts and a spanner). I've gone the S3X route, but I'm lazy (don't want to be mucking about with the rear wheel).

If anyone can nose-wheelie while flipping a wheel around, I will be forever in awe.

Well there is always the possibility of running a Schlumpf up front for a two speed fixed gear.

Couldn't you get a multi speed fixed hub?

Again, he's not asking if it's possible to have fixed gear bike with multiple ratios or gears. He's asking if it's possible to use two chainrings up front, which is very clear by reading the title of the damn thread.

It wouldn't work on a fixed gear, but my next bike will probably be a cross bike with a 2x1 drivetrain like this.

My friend however did keep 2 chainrings on his track bike to use the outer ring as a "chain guard." He was and still is a cheap mofo.

That doesn't really make sense, but it's kinda cool.
