Messengers/posengers: any place online (or otherwise) to get a nice metal keychain that goes around the wrist? I'm tired of the loopy plastic one.

Take a length of chain, put it around your wrist. Pass a keychain ring over it. Link it up. Voila.

You can thank me later.

Go to Northern Tool. They have a key hanger that looks like a seventies seat belt release. You can clip it to your strap or clothing and hit the release to pop the keys off leaving the mount in place.

That is close but it looks like this. They have them up front by the register, I did not see it on the catalog.

The second item pictured you can get at any hardware and you could run a chain through one loop and pop your keys off. I use one with shop keys on one end and house keys on the otherso I can split them up on a ride and carry less.

Couldn't you just chop out a buckle from some abandoned car? It would be free after all. I use the beaner through the belt loop, and that hasn't steered me wrong, something on my wrist would bother me.

the wrist band thing has bothered me for a long time... seemed to me to be one of those things that was just a way of screaming "look at me bike people!"
i can pull a caribeaner off my belt loop just as fast as you can get that goofy neoprene dealie off your wrist...

for a while i had one of my krypto keys around my neck... i'd filed the body/handle part of the key into a cross... but the chain broke and i lost the key... that was a bummer night...

Not that it'd be hard to do, but the Northern Tool seatbelt buckle dealie has a bent metal clip attached to the back of the buckle. As the Rev. said, you clip the buckle ('Honda' in the picture) to your strap, belt, whatever and the keyring insert comes in and out. Nifty idea.

At the risk of sounding defensive.

The whole point is you don't take it off your wrist. The key is right there in your hand ready to go as soon as you step off the bike.

The other big plus is that you rarely forget/lose your key cause its pretty obvious when its missing.

my point was that it's still just as fast...
plus my pants rattle so ditto for the missing keys...

my biggest complaint about wrist straps tho is that the few times i've worn one, the key gets between my hand and the handle bar almost immediately...

I have used a full size mountain climbing clip for years with a barrel on it to keep it closed it never fails and is easy to take off and can be used as brass nuckles too I clip it on my bag on keep it in my pocket if it rains .. Steeker

Here's a question for those who use the chains: do you ever take it off? How do you get it on (provided you're using a chain tool - one handed action)? Is there some kind of quick release mod? I've always liked the idea but with showering, other naked times where a key on a chain might be a little distracting, and so on, how do you deal?

SRAM Powerlink and wax the chain so it doesn't rust.

I used a saftey pin to close the chain. Kept it closed when it needed to be closed, and when it need to be off, it was able to come off quickly.
I stopped wearing a chain because it started to irritate my wrist, leaving a rash and cuts. Not good.
