lugs

ok so i'm having a Rambouillet style fixie built by jon kendziera, i'm stuck on the lugs, which ones do you guys like better?

sachs newvex http://jonnycycles.com/images/newvex...nd%20crown.jpg

or

pacenti http://jonnycycles.com/images/pacentiorig.jpg

absntr 02-28-05 03:47 PM

While I think you can't go wrong with either, I love the detail and intricacy of the newvex lugs.

bostontrevor 02-28-05 03:49 PM

Gotta go with the Sachs, though I'd like to see the BB shell on both and the fork crown lugs for the Pacenti. But I can see those lugs either painted or polished to a high shine and the Sachs just have that special something. They remind me of the old Paramount lugs. Yum!

dolface 02-28-05 03:51 PM

sachs, the pacenti are nice too, but sachs is already a classic

Alexi 02-28-05 03:53 PM

jon is going to be putting a heart cut-out on the top tube-stearer tube and on the sides of the seat-tube for me, the bike will be painted cream with british racing green lugs, so the hearts will be painted cream thru the green.

keevohn 02-28-05 03:54 PM

Gotta go with the Pacenti lugs. Nervex lugs have always struck me as excessively gaudy... too busy. The Pacenti lugs are just elegant. Any idea what sort of fork crown you'd go with?

Alexi 02-28-05 03:54 PM

no idea on the for crown

Treespeed 02-28-05 04:58 PM

I vote Sachs Newvex.

Great color choices, make sure you post pics when its all done.

Chimay 02-28-05 05:07 PM

Modern or old school? Pacenti for modern, Newvex for old. personally I think the Newvex are way to busy and baroque looking. For fork crown, go Henry James. Here: http://www.cccycles.com/crowns.html

HelluvaStella 02-28-05 05:27 PM

oh yeah, newvex

filtersweep 02-28-05 05:28 PM

What the hell is "Newvex" ?

ultra-g 02-28-05 05:30 PM

Yup, the Sachs are a winner!

bostontrevor 02-28-05 05:57 PM

Newvex is Richard Sachs' take on Nervex lugs, Pro I think, which is why they look like the old Paramount lugs.

Gadzooks! I actually learned something here today.

Sachs has a cool website... found these:

dolface 02-28-05 06:42 PM

sachs as more than a cool website, he's also got about a 3 year waiting-list.
you seen any of his bikes? *drool*

gotta love the Sachs.
I saw 2 Sach's Track Iron at the Framebuilders show in
Houston, poetry in motion. Very nice frames indeed.
but have you seen what have been done with Kirk's lugs?
check out
http://www.bikelugs.com/pacentigallery/index.html

Here's what Brian Baylis did with Kirk's lugs:

WithNail 02-28-05 06:45 PM

I would argue that those are about the most beautiful lugs that I have ever laid my eyes on. . . you know not too much but enough to catch your eye.

manboy 02-28-05 06:46 PM

You've got to be kidding. Pardon my saying so, but I don't really care one way or the other.

bostontrevor 02-28-05 06:53 PM

Pretty ridiculous, but for all out nutso I don't think you can beat Hetchins. Those are just baroque in the true sense of the word. They also remind me of a gingerbread house.

There was an LBS that had one in the window for a bit around Halloween I think...Wow. Just gorgeous. Maybe a little too rich for my blood, it'd be like trying to make a meal out of caviar, but the detailing was absolutely unbelievable.

dolface 02-28-05 08:28 PM

the hetchins are too much for me, but if you want a hetchins looking bike, this guy is selling lugsets on ebay http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZclivesqualitytraining

no pics though :(

biff 02-28-05 09:40 PM

To me, as a beginning framebuilder, the Pacenti lugs are nice - but they seem to be more suitable for sculpting (so fat and long) - which is what most people do.

The Newvex are oldschool sexy.

agreed, pacenti's have too much metal left on them, while sachs' are just ready to put together, and sexy.

bostontrevor,
Although Hetchins are over the top ornate, Bohemian from Tucson takes the cake hands down. Try this all stainless steel, completely polished bike with (umm) carved lugs... http://www.bohemianbicycles.com/images%202/stain17.jpg

bostontrevor 03-01-05 08:22 AM

While I'll grant that that's some absolutely remarkable craftsmanship, I don't know that I can say "hands down". For one thing I don't think those are all lug, they're too long. I suspect that additional metal filigree has been laid down separately and blended in with the lug.

If you look at the lugs he has on offer, they're not that big: http://www.bohemianbicycles.com/lug_fittings.htm

On the other hand... http://www.hetchins.org/501oak.htm & http://www.hetchins.org/504a.htm are pretty phenomenal in their own right.

Hetchins also had many different styles of lugs: http://www.hetchins.org/lugs.htm
