Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

While I think you can't go wrong with either, I love the detail and intricacy of the newvex lugs.

Gotta go with the Sachs, though I'd like to see the BB shell on both and the fork crown lugs for the Pacenti. But I can see those lugs either painted or polished to a high shine and the Sachs just have that special something. They remind me of the old Paramount lugs. Yum!

jon is going to be putting a heart cut-out on the top tube-stearer tube and on the sides of the seat-tube for me, the bike will be painted cream with british racing green lugs, so the hearts will be painted cream thru the green.

Gotta go with the Pacenti lugs. Nervex lugs have always struck me as excessively gaudy... too busy. The Pacenti lugs are just elegant. Any idea what sort of fork crown you'd go with?

Modern or old school? Pacenti for modern, Newvex for old. personally I think the Newvex are way to busy and baroque looking. For fork crown, go Henry James. Here: https://www.cccycles.com/crowns.html

Newvex is Richard Sachs' take on Nervex lugs, Pro I think, which is why they look like the old Paramount lugs.

Bikes: 1 trek, serotta, rih, de Reus, Pogliaghi and finally a Zieleman! and got a DeRosa

gotta love the Sachs.
I saw 2 Sach's Track Iron at the Framebuilders show in
Houston, poetry in motion. Very nice frames indeed.
but have you seen what have been done with Kirk's lugs?
check out

Here's what Brian Baylis did with Kirk's lugs:

I would argue that those are about the most beautiful lugs that I have ever laid my eyes on. . . you know not too much but enough to catch your eye.

You've got to be kidding. Pardon my saying so, but I don't really care one way or the other.

Pretty ridiculous, but for all out nutso I don't think you can beat Hetchins. Those are just baroque in the true sense of the word. They also remind me of a gingerbread house.

There was an LBS that had one in the window for a bit around Halloween I think...Wow. Just gorgeous. Maybe a little too rich for my blood, it'd be like trying to make a meal out of caviar, but the detailing was absolutely unbelievable.

Bikes: Moyer Cycles #1 - A fixie of course.

To me, as a beginning framebuilder, the Pacenti lugs are nice - but they seem to be more suitable for sculpting (so fat and long) - which is what most people do.

The Newvex are oldschool sexy.

agreed, pacenti's have too much metal left on them, while sachs' are just ready to put together, and sexy.

bostontrevor,
Although Hetchins are over the top ornate, Bohemian from Tucson takes the cake hands down. Try this all stainless steel, completely polished bike with (umm) carved lugs... https://www.bohemianbicycles.com/images%202/stain17.jpg

While I'll grant that that's some absolutely remarkable craftsmanship, I don't know that I can say "hands down". For one thing I don't think those are all lug, they're too long. I suspect that additional metal filigree has been laid down separately and blended in with the lug.

If you look at the lugs he has on offer, they're not that big: https://www.bohemianbicycles.com/lug_fittings.htm

On the other hand... https://www.hetchins.org/501oak.htm & https://www.hetchins.org/504a.htm are pretty phenomenal in their own right.

Hetchins also had many different styles of lugs: https://www.hetchins.org/lugs.htm
