So last saturday I had my fixie locked up on the Hill here in boulder colorado went home with some friends and returned the next day to find lock and bike gone. It broke my heart. So my ride was a bianchi pista 52x16 cowhorn bars with black and white tape. Front wheel a little out of true. Coupla a dings. I'm keepin a watch on craigs list and around town. It's a fairly common bike but if any of you hear anything or see one here in boulder drop me a line. I really miss her. Thanks

Wow, I am super happy to see this thread replied to so much. It makes me happy that if this ever happened to me, I could turn to the rest of the fixie posse to watch out for my ••••.
About how it got stolen, I have no idea? She might reply back to me, but I carry a chain and a u with me, and if that is not enough, then what to do?
And I totally condone some ultra-violence on anyone who messes with, or steals someones bike. cough-- ahem-- blowdart-- cough-- baton.

I say we chain the thief to the pole. Not violent but fun.

Note to self: If there's a van parked nearby, do not steal bike.
Muuahahahah.
I like the blowdart and chaining to pole ideas. Maybe a blowdart with tranquilizer can subdue the perp till the authorities arrive. Of course, we'd want it to be a pretty LARGE dart.

This is terrible. I don't know the girl but have seen her around I think (is she Asian?). I have seen those pink phils. they are beautiful.
As for the sting operation, I am in. seriously.
We have a good fixie community here in SF/east bay with most riders being pretty cool, friendly, etc. What do you guys think about passing the hat, getting a little collection together? Would people be willing to chip in? I definitely would. I know (probably) none of us are loaded, but think about how much money you dropped last weekend at Zeitgeist. or wherever. Now think if we ALL threw together SOME of that money to a cause just slightly more noble than pickling out livers, what a good thing that would be.
Not only would we be helping a member of our community who, it seems, is a sweet girl but it would really reinforce that community.
I'm serious. I will personally put it together or we can probably organize it through Freewheel. I bet Travis would help out when he returns from Italy.
we might not be able to replace her exact bike, but we can help her get back on A bike, right?
let's do something good for someone else
Think about it and post your thoughts on this thread.

i'll kick in, but it raises some interesting questions: what happens next time someone's ride get ripped off?
we can't (or i can't anyway) keep donating to the bike replacement fund, and why does this person (caroline, right?) get a bike donated by the community, but not the next person, or the one after that?
i'm not trying to be a d|ck, i'm just trying to think out the implications of this.
thoughts?

that sucks...
that's also why i never let my bike out of my sight anywhere uphill from folsom...
we did that here in oakland after i had a wheel stolen off my stingray and a couple days later got my tandem boosted... both in broad daylight...
we left a sorta fancy suspension bike on the same corner with a hardware store cable lock, and after drinking beer in the alley across the street for two days nobody even glanced at it...
****ing lame...

all this talk about locks and chains but someone mentioned renters or home owners insurance in this thread but it was never brought up again. has anyone claimed insurance on their stolen bike? i filed a claim on my recently teefed fuji track and promptly got slapped for a $500 deductible. no wonder insurance companies in ontario (or was that canada?) had record profits last year. i think insurance is a necessary evil.. not just to protect your bike, but your other possessions as well.

That is not solving a problem globally, rahter its addressing a single case.
i think buying lunch and brews for the sting operations would be better

good points.
Hopefully, this sort of thing will happen less frequently as we all become more vigilant. It seemed that the spirit of the thread was one of community. If we do this - and I really think we should - we are not necessarily setting a precedent. I mean, I dont think if a thief gets away with Judah or ostro's bike (god forbid), they're gonna pipe up that we OWE them a bike or a collection fund just because we did it for someone else, you know?
I guess another consideration is Caroline's own financial situation. maybe she IS loaded and can buy a new one on her own. probably not, though. Who here knows her? she doesn't post here, does she?
The way I see it, between the 10-20 SF/east bay peeps we have on the forum, plus our other fixie friends that may not post here, we can get a good hunk of change together without any real significant expense to any one of us.

Bikes: Handbuilt steel with Ultegra10/FSA parts; a fully customized Bianchi Pista with phil hubs, carbon fork, king headset, etc. it's tough.
a friend of my wife got his bike ganked in an obvious (to me, not him) way... he locked his bike up, came back and saw that someone had put /another/ lock on his bike (and another one next to his).
stupidly, he took his lock off before he noticed, then walked about trying to find the owner of the other bike. while he was away, the thief walked up, took off the extra lock, then took his bike. very simple scam.
grr... i hate meth heads.

I like MattyOs idea of the donation. That could be nice, or at least enough to get her another pair of pink phils. The Bob Jackson won't be so easy to replace. I don't know her so I don't really know her situation, but nice bike means money is coming from somewhere. Maybe Travis could talk to the Phil people or something and work out a deal at cost for a new pair of hubs.
The renters insurance thing is a great plan if you can do it. I have thought about it, and this seems like a good time to go ahead with it. $500 deductible is not that bad considering how much money I have put into that bike of mine. If it will get me back up and going with something comparable, I would definitely pay the $500.

I think it's kind of odd that people post about stuff getting stolen really often here, and daily on craigslist and other places I know a lot of you guys troll around at, and this is the first time I've heard mention of passing the hat (not that it isn't an awesome gesture and a great thing to do for the community), but in the back of my mind a little man is screaming "cute girl! sick bike!".. that wouldn't have anything to do with it would it boys?
Anyway, I'm not trying to start that argument today haha.. but what I would like to do is propose we have a meeting somewhere over some coffee or beers this weekend or next (or whenever works for everyone interested); and we actually come up with a plan to do what the cops won't.

i'd be all over the sting operation so fast. but you have to have the crucial ski masks and super soakers or something. or you could just do straight up lead pipes.

I hope this isnt about the fact that she is a girl. I don't know her, but she did have a nice bike, and I know how I would be if mine got stolen (and it isn't as nice as a Bob Jackson.)
But hat or no hat, just knowing the people are going to keep a look out is awesome.

wouldn't it be awesome if we got the sting operation going, found the perp, and every time we hit the thief, the "spirit" of each bike he has stolen floats out of his chest and gets returned to the rightful owner, much like at the end of Mortal Kombat, when Shang Tsung gets defeated and all the souls that he's sucked up get released?

Thanks so much for posting this on the forum!!! Someone emailed saying there was a post on bikeforums.net. I've never really looked at these forums but I can totally see why they're so important and awesome. I'm so stoked on the resonse...and it's really raising my hopes... I'm totally crushed by this theft and am totally thankful for your support. Just an FYI: The bikes were locked with one chain lock and one u-lock. Not as tough as two u-locks, but still... I'm flyering around town and at bike shops and just letting everyone I know to keep an eye out....
here are links to pictures of the bikes:

hmmmmmm i believe i've seen you with your Bob Jackson around 14th/S. Van Ness.
again, radar ON. my eyes are always peeled on Division Street where most homeless encampments look more like bike flea markets.
