Okay, here's a question for you NYC folks. Years ago I went to this amazing veggie-only place in Chinatown. I'm trying to figure out what it was called, I'm thinking vegetarian paradise???

I think I saw that place today as well. Everything was around $5-6? On Lafayette maybe?

If it's on Mott St. across from what used to be Hong Fat's ( that place kicked ass) it's called House of Vegetarian. God I miss NYC!

if we're only talking dumplings, mandoo bar is pretty awesome too. they've got one shop on 32nd st (korea town) and another on university. i want to try rickshaw as well, which just opened on 23rd st.

and there are also numerous '6 dumplings for $2' tiny shops in chinatown as well, which just rock.

yes, how could i forget? congee village is my all-time favorite restaurant in all of new york : cheap food, cheap drinks, open late, and MY LORD the decor. i remember when it first opened, my dad dragged the whole family there and i thought he was nuts. last year for my bday i rented out a small karaoke room for me and 10 friends... we pigged out, got wasted and sang songs at the top of our lungs for 4 hours and they didn't once bother us. oh man.

there are many breakfast bakeries, but my family's favorite is MANNA bakery (look for purple & yellow awnings) scattered around at several locations in *****town. no bun should cost more than 60¢, sandwiches are $1. not as great, but decent is GOLDEN CARRIAGE (salmon-color awning)

dare i start in on dim sum spots?

My favorite cheap dumpling spot is on Eldridge, between Grand and Broome. You can eat very well for a few bucks max. Get the sesame pancake beef sandwich thing and dumplings, really good and scary cheap.

Right on, I forgot to mention the decor, it's off the hook and then some. Great spot indeed. Turd, you ever try that mystery liquor in the wooden keg thing on the bar? Any idea what that is?

i heard Dumpling Man is a total ripoff (although i've never been).

my all time fave for Dumplings:
Fried Dumpling
Allen Street just south of Delancy.

besides fresh, you can buy frozen bags of 30 dumplings for $5.

if you like your bagel with more of a crust, then go to Murray's Bagel's on 6th ave/13th street. they make them in house (there's also another location in near the Chelsea Hotel). i would highly suggest the everything bagel with jalepeno cream cheese.

i have a atax stem and a 13tooth cog if you need...

enjoy your stay.

I haven't heard enough good about Joe's Shanghai, but everytime I pass I see a lot of people outside

But I had some good soup dumpling just down the street from Haagen Dazs, heading towards the police lockup (I forget the name but it had a red brick exterior)
