Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? any idea what this is?

I'm meeting a guy selling this wheelset on the craigs today.
https://austin.craigslist.org/bik/4107892040.html

He has no idea what the wheelset is. I've been looking at photos for comparison of other wheelsets for sale online.

Does anyone have a similar set and want to give me a few clues as to what to look (ie. small branding on the hub or rim) when we meet to get a better idea?

Thanks in advance.

Bikes: Several, mostly not name brands.

Doesn't look like anything fancy, but if they're in good shape $80 isn't a bad price.

Seems a little sketchy to me that the guy knows they were $100 new but doesn't know what they are. Then again I find Craigslist to be a little sketchy in general. Not to say deals can't be had but I always go into deals looking for detailed and accurate information and that the seller actually knows what they are talking about.

yeah i wasn't sure what the text in that post was trying to say. I couldn't tell if he was saying the were "new in box" which makes no since for a wheelset, or that they were $100 when they were new which is impossible. In a text message he said that they were given to him by a friend and had only been used lightly.

it's down to these or a pair of vuelta zerolites off nashbar for $109 plus shipping.

They're just generic OEM wheels, most likely with loose ball bearing hubs. If it were my hundred bucks, I wouldn't buy them.

I've bought three sets of Zerolights from Nashbar, although they have been 26" MTB wheels for flip bikes, and every set has been a great value. No problems. I took one set off the Craiglist bike and use them on my new commuter. Smooth and true.

The set from Nashbar for singlespeeds is almost a pound lighter than the Weinmanns. The Weinmann wheels might be better...............but from my limited experience with only three sets, the Zerolights are a hard bargain to beat.

I don't know if either comes with sealed bearings or not.............and I don't care. There were several bikes sold that went a few miles before sealed bearings were even available. Service the things and go. No big deal.

Wow, that's all so helpful. Turned out that he lived next to my lbs so we met there and they clued me in. They were indeed generic crap. So I'll be waiting for the vueltas in the mail. Thanks again for all the help.

Vuelta Zerolites really aren't any better considering they also have crappy loose ball bearing hubs, are considerably heavy and will need to be trued and tensioned when they come out of the box.

Actually last minute I decided to go with the wienmans. Even if they are a bit heavier they come Fixed/Fixed, and I couldn't pass up the origin 8 hub. Now I have to decide if I want to sell the State wheel set or convert them for polo.
