Cool!! and extra points for "jucify"

deadly downtube 07-14-05 01:15 AM

nice!
it's just too bad you now have a dozen or more malignant tumors and various other cancers thanks to using Jasco.

medicinhed 07-14-05 01:38 AM

I'll just wear a mask and do it outside. Bare chrome should be worth the riskie for my fixie. Sorry it's late.

This stripped Pista looks so much better without the decals. Enhances the simple look of the track bike.

I saw on a Pista frame on Ebay a month ago. I wish I bought it and stripped it down like this.

i have one that i had stripped (down to the chrome.. not down to the bare metal)
then powder coated black. came out great.
supposedly removing the chrome is too vicious... if attempted, the agents will also pitt the steel. and ruin the frame.. but yes, you can powdercoat over chrome.

Doing this project right now. I'll post more when I get it done.

Project report:

All of Stickerguy's steps worked well. Do look specifically for the Jasco Adhesive remover.

I used a thick coat of jasco and let it sit. You can actually see it work and bubble up the clear coat and work into the decal. If you rush it, then you will see little bits of clearcoat and logo that the jasco didn't get into. Let it sit. I don't think that it will hurt the chrome much. I let the jasco sit on the clearcoat for about 20 or so minutes. Used a plastic fast food knife with a serated edge and scraped up the clearcoat as it buibbles up. I even dabbed here and there to get rid of bits. You can tell if you have clearcoat left as the Jasco will react with it, but not on the chrome.

I wiped it clean, and then washed it.

WEAR GLOVES. DO NOT GET ANY ON YOU. IT WILL BURN AND TAKE OFF HAIR. WASH IMMEDIATELY UNDER WATER.

Seriously, wear gloves. This stuff is very poisonous. I recommend not doing this as a stony project, or drinking copious amounts.

I'm debating whether or not to clear coat. You can see how the naked chrome looks so much brighter. The clearcoated sections looked almost milky. If I had the time I would strip everything off the bike and jasco the entire thing. all the little dings, and nicks that were on the clear coat and that I thought were on the bike dissappeared. The frame looks almost new.

I'll look at it under better light tomorrow and decide about the clearcoat then. I can see using the clearcoat to protect against dings and whatnot, but I'd rather not complicate this project more then needed.

Thing is- I don't think the Pista is really chrome, but rather a chromish paint?

eddiebrannan 07-26-05 03:07 PM

so you think you would have to entirely strip the bike before powdercoating?

Not an expert, but I would probably think so. Otherwise you would be powder coating on top of clearcoat.

I dont think that it would be difficult at all remove all the components and strip off the decals and clear coat with the procedure stickerguy outlined. Although I would for sure clear coat after your powdercoat.

I looked at the bike again today in the sunlight. You can for sure see a line where the old clear coat is and where the bare chrome is. I'm retaping and spot jascoing later when it cools down. But I'm thinking that I'll probably not clear coat.

Here's the materials safety data sheet for the Jasco Adhesive Remover: http://www.jasco-help.com/msds/adhesive_remover.pdf

I worked at a power plant and we used these all the time for chemicals and things. It's just good to know what you're keeping around the abode. It doesn't look safe enough to pour down the sink, and I wonder how you would dispose of it otherwise.

eddiebrannan 08-17-05 09:13 AM

take er outside and down the drain in the street?

Surferbruce 08-17-05 09:20 AM

drain down the street? VERY bad call.

errr...yeah...crap.

Here's how long it takes for some commonly used products to biodegrade, when they are scattered about as litter:

Cotton rags 1-5 months
Paper 2-5 months
Rope 3-14 months
Orange peels 6 months
Wool socks 1 to 5 years
Cigarette butts 1 to 12 years
Plastic coated paper milk cartons 5 years
Plastic bags 10 to 20 years
Leather shoes 25 to 40 years
Nylon fabric 30 to 40 years
Tin cans 50 to 100 years
Aluminum cans 80 to 100 years
Plastic 6-pack holder rings 450 years
Glass bottles 1 million years
Plastic bottles Forever

I say throw this thread down the drain too.

r0cket- 08-17-05 11:00 AM

You could probably get the clearcoat professionally and inexpensively removed somewhere by people who actually know how to handle and dispose of the toxic chemicals required for the process.

love when people want a thread to die and then post in it to say so, thereby topping it http://bb.nsmb.com/images/smilies/roll.gif

mcsurf 08-17-05 11:39 AM

more about the fork please. where, how much, how do you like it? are you still running the stock headset or did you change it out with the fork? looks good...long live the Pista.

auroch 08-18-05 11:59 AM

..

mcsurf 08-18-05 02:01 PM

thanks

dushuodai 09-20-05 05:36 PM

does this work for the '05 pista as well??

eddiebrannan 09-20-05 06:17 PM

no the 05 has a completely different clearcoat. it's atomically bonded to the metal rather than sprayed on. jasco, rock miracle etc can't break down the nano-bond, and instead just bubble the surface and turn it a weird baby-***** color (not celeste!). don't try it if you don't want your bike to look like it has leprosy. apparently this was done at the order of bianchi's head designer who was pissed that people were removing the "100% chick-designed" decal. this year's is chick-designed or leprous - choice is yours. it's why all the people on this board like isotopepope or whatever his name is hate them so much and go on about their italian-made bianchis from the 80s. pre-nano-clearcoat technology makes all the difference.

ps this is a lie. just jasco it

Ah, finally a good laugh at a joke in good spirit on the FG/SS forum!

Jamtastic 09-20-05 06:47 PM

hahaahhahaa.a ...

dushuodai 09-20-05 10:24 PM

what is the point of covering the rest of the bike up with tape and what not before applying jasco?
