Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

True on both counts - but there are some people here I simply can't endure.

It's because they are the equivilant to a speederbike, or lightcycle, you want to be clipped in at 300mph.

Yall can say all yall want, but I'd want to be clamped in to a fixie, like I'd want to be clamped to a high wheeler. I have the original S&R platforms on my fixie, to be replaced by my faaaavooooiite, bmx pedals. Cry, cry, cry.

Back in the late 90's all my messenger friends would make fun of me for using BMX pedals. They all had fancy Campy pedals etc etc, and i was riding 13$ GT BMX platforms. Those things were great for everyday abuse. Cheap and comfortable, and if you popped out the little reflector, two little holes for toe clips.

I can understand why some fixed-gear riders who run brakes don't think there is a need for foot retention, but after riding fixed this last year I don't understand why you would want to ride without it, perceived need or not. At first I hated getting my right foot into a moving target (I used clips when I started and now straps) but as I've gotten used to it all I see are the advantages that Bandera mentioned: You're quicker off the line, quicker sprinting, and far more efficient.

Now I feel naked without foot retention and awkward as hell riding anything with a freewheel. Foot retention increases your control over your bike in addition to just being safer.

In other news: I learned to track stand at stop lights in downtown Los Angeles. I am not great at it. I have fallen attempting this precisely twice; once in front of a large group of people who I was trying to impress (and I tore my pants). Like the gentleman who rides fixed with no retention in sandals, I can confirm that I am still alive. Also: There are far, far worse things that can happen on your bike than a spill at 0 mph. If you're worried about looking dumb, your bike is probably cooler than you are.

Don't pay heed to these bike prudes, and their "proper technique," might as well be ttping with a british accent as well.
