The bikes are also popular with racers wanting to work on their form, commuters who ride in rain and snow, and, increasingly, with those taking up track racing on banked velodromes.
Huh - didn't know you could ride anything else on the track...

"...she worries that many are ridden by inexperienced female riders whose boyfriends convinced them it was cool. "

Great. we dumb broads can't choose bikes for ourselves and let our steady dates steer us into stuff. lovely.

I wasn't a fan of the way that article ended either - threw it off. And it really was a strupid line - especially coming out of her mouth, unless of course the reporter misquoted her.

I'm not really worried about the ladies;) I'm more concerned with the male testosterone cowboy type wanting to ride brakeless "instanltly" because everyone else is.

i had just posted about the article too. my favorite quote being the comparison of a direct drive bike to a big wheel. priceless. :D

"while others retrofit old steel road bikes into the "fixies" now often seen parked outside hip city bars."

GREAT!!! Now in order to stay cool and be accepted, I gotta go to "hip" city bars as opposed to "crappy, cheap" bars.

fixedfiend 04-07-05 09:33 AM

"GREAT!!! Now in order to stay cool and be accepted, I gotta go to "hip" city bars as opposed to "crappy, cheap" bars"

"hip" city bars = "crappy, cheap" bars in nyc.

hahahaha... she just loves being in control. I wonder if she ties her bike to the bed and drips wax on it.

ostro 04-07-05 09:41 AM

The question, "what if fixed gear goes mainstream?" has now been answered. we would all go to hip city bars, ride brakeless, and be college kids.

Look out!!! NOOOOO BRAAAAAAKES!!!!!!!!!

wangster 04-07-05 10:30 AM

finally i'm accepted and am part of a "hip" crowd. i still need to go get my dickies and metal studded belt, then my look is complete. Oh, I guess I should get my gf to ride a fixie too, brakeless of course.

stevo 04-07-05 10:41 AM

is it just me, or are they handing out journalism/communication degrees like candy these days?

Ha!

If it means more people riding, I'll allow it. It doesn't take a Humvee to drive four blocks for a loaf of bread.

Just keep your trust funds out of my dives.

phidauex 04-07-05 10:48 AM

Stuff isn't 'mainstream' just because an article says it is. Wired, being 'hip', must make everything it writes about sound like the hippest new hip thing in town. Otherwise no one would like it, because they wouldn't feel like they are on the cutting edge of hip-ness.

So don't worry about it, nothing will change because of a wired article.

peace,
sam

being frugal makes it last longer.

and when I come outside, I better not see your bike leaning against mine.

Given the amount of media coverage lately I would say the trend is almost over. I'm a bit surprised I haven't had some one tell me that fixies are "so '04" ... of course, I don't really talk to people.

On the plus side, by next winter there should be tons of used fixie stuff on the -Bay that will go for reasonable prices. Three cheers for supply and demand! So keep the articles coming ... nothing kills hip faster than exposure.

The question is, will the next thing be as easy on the environment as bikes?

manboy 04-07-05 11:56 AM

Guys, I think the point is this:

"MORE BUTTS ON BIKES."

naisme 04-07-05 11:59 AM

LOL. I enjoyed the article, but then I got a stroke this morning for riding up on a java joint and some guy on a ladder looks down at me, and asks if I'm riding a fixed gear. "Not just a fixed gear, a Track frame to boot." He climbed off the rook and we talked bikes for a moment.
As for seeing fixed gears outside of trendy hip bars, I don't think she was talking about NYC, it's the rage outside the local trendy bars here in the great fly-over country. I get out of work at midnight and get to cruise through our city that now is offically a smoking in restaraunts and bars, coffee shops ban, county wide. I see some sweet track frames locked to light poles and bunches of inibriates puffing heaters next to them.
I think the scary part of the article is definately the thought of more butts on bikes. Although with the coming gas crisis this summer there are going to be more and more butts on bikes to contend with.
