I wasn't a fan of the way that article ended either - threw it off. And it really was a strupid line - especially coming out of her mouth, unless of course the reporter misquoted her.

I'm not really worried about the ladies I'm more concerned with the male testosterone cowboy type wanting to ride brakeless "instanltly" because everyone else is.

i had just posted about the article too. my favorite quote being the comparison of a direct drive bike to a big wheel. priceless.

finally i'm accepted and am part of a "hip" crowd. i still need to go get my dickies and metal studded belt, then my look is complete. Oh, I guess I should get my gf to ride a fixie too, brakeless of course.

Stuff isn't 'mainstream' just because an article says it is. Wired, being 'hip', must make everything it writes about sound like the hippest new hip thing in town. Otherwise no one would like it, because they wouldn't feel like they are on the cutting edge of hip-ness.

So don't worry about it, nothing will change because of a wired article.

Given the amount of media coverage lately I would say the trend is almost over. I'm a bit surprised I haven't had some one tell me that fixies are "so '04" ... of course, I don't really talk to people.

On the plus side, by next winter there should be tons of used fixie stuff on the -Bay that will go for reasonable prices. Three cheers for supply and demand! So keep the articles coming ... nothing kills hip faster than exposure.

The question is, will the next thing be as easy on the environment as bikes?

Guys, I think the point is this:

LOL. I enjoyed the article, but then I got a stroke this morning for riding up on a java joint and some guy on a ladder looks down at me, and asks if I'm riding a fixed gear. "Not just a fixed gear, a Track frame to boot." He climbed off the rook and we talked bikes for a moment.
As for seeing fixed gears outside of trendy hip bars, I don't think she was talking about NYC, it's the rage outside the local trendy bars here in the great fly-over country. I get out of work at midnight and get to cruise through our city that now is offically a smoking in restaraunts and bars, coffee shops ban, county wide. I see some sweet track frames locked to light poles and bunches of inibriates puffing heaters next to them.
I think the scary part of the article is definately the thought of more butts on bikes. Although with the coming gas crisis this summer there are going to be more and more butts on bikes to contend with.
