yesterday, while i was riding home, i saw more fixed and ss bikes than i had in the weeks before total. it was 60 (warm) and not raining, which may have been part of it - there were more bikes out in general. so i'm spinnin along, and this audi and audi dood pull up beside me, and we start talking. he: "is that a fixed gear?". me: "yep". he: "those are all the rage now, i've seen a ton of them today." me: "yep. i saw more today than ever". audi dood was a hipster. i couldn't see any pleats. didn't really look at his pants though.

i'm a noob to fixed. it seemed like the simplest build after my commuter was stolen. and there was crazy evangelism (this forum, sheldon "grand poobah" brown, et al.). i tried it out and love it. and it really does seem the best solution for a commuter. and now some sick part of me is beginning to think it's the best thing for technical off-road.

I think I saw a hipster today at school, he was wearing puma ventoux's, tight pants, a moppy hair cut, a studded belt, and a patch that said "Bike Punk" on his sweatshirt. He gave me a dirty look, my mix of Old Navy shorts, etnies, a Giant bikes tshirt, shaved legs, Manhattan Portage bag, and fixed gear conversion must have confused his hipster mind. Im kind of glad that with the exception of being in Jersey City for school during the week I am safely hidden away in the suburbs far from anyone who actually cares about hipness.

We live in NYC, one of the most fashionable places in the world, so I don't mind the hipsters really, I'm guilty of being one at times. It also has a lot to do with what you do for a living. I'd like to get back to my cali roots and wear nothing but boardshorts and sandles all day, but as chill as my office is, that still isn't very professional. I think it's something about people not wanting a beach bum designing their houses. I think we need to seperate hipster from poseurs. I have plenty of hipster friends and a there are A LOT of poseurs at my school. So it just a matter of weeding them out. Poseurs are the ones that rides only to be seen and don't go more than a mile. They will get bored soon and start to mimic something else.
I'm confident enough in the lure of fixies that most people who start with it because it's a trend will stick with it. Isn't that what we want? more people in our army of bikers?
My policy has always been to let natual selection take it's course. The idiots will give up or get run over and the people who truely enjoy a bike will stay with it.

I don't really understand what you guys are on about anyway, but I'd much prefer to deal with superficial style mongers on bikes in the city than no-style suburb dwellers in caravans and tahoes.

This is when the intarweb sucks, because nobody can hear how loudly I'm laughing right now. Most of my friends are blatant hipsters, and I make fun of them constantly. I get made fun of, too. Hell, I just bought new shoes, and their DIESELS for the love of pants. Let the hipsters feel bad - I want my laughs.

I think I'm more of a hipster than a fixie rider, but more of a fixie rider than a hipster/poseur fixie rider--I'm pretty sure I have the hipster-fixie rider style all wrong--I look more like a commuter who's lost, confused and about to fall over on a fixed gear bike. All of these fashionista-esque hipster stylie debates make my head hurt, though. I've just found that all of the friends I have, none of whom ride bikes, just think I look like a big bike dork. And my g/f, who's terrified of riding a bike on city streets, just wants me to stop ogling every bike I see between my apt. and the subway stop. I'm thinking that maybe everyone here (m'self included) may be suffering their own minor bike-related identity crisis. ...is what I'm thinkin', is all...

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not expected to wear a suit and tie. Infact, if i did wear a suite to work my boss would question my sanity. I'm usually in jeans and sneakers. Because of the nature of my office, we don't get snobby clients, which is why i like where i work.

Does anyone remember that scene is SLC Punk when the girl polietly reminds the punkrocker that he whines all the time about how he is unique, and doesnt care what people think about him, and he sets his own trends and styles, and he doesnt want people to pay attention to him.
