There's a homeless guy around here that has been riding his bike sans chain for at least two months. I'm kind of impressed cause I've seen him all over and all he has to do is not buy meth for a day and he could afford a chain.

If he fitted a chain, he'd have to ride it properly. This way, he's got a more manageable alternative. I'm not saying he doesn't have problems but maybe his subconscious is looking after him. We humans can be very good at surviving while being seriously ****ed up ... yet it can also take very little to push us over the edge. Life, who'd have it.

But for real is there any reason to drop some cash on a new chain? Mine is hipster blue which is pretty lame. It's funny how things changed most people who ride track bikes now ride much plainer bikes, I rarely even see deep Vs. Guess that was a dumb fad but I can't lie council of doom is the reason I got my first fixed bike.

I'm fairly certain you worry about your bike much more than you ride it.

And you worry about it for the remaining 12-14 that you're awake.

OK, so srs question, and I am prepared to get totally ridiculed here:

How often do you need to replace your chain on a SS/FG bike?

I ride my ss/fg pretty seldomly, like maybe <20mi/week on average throughout the year. Still, the chain has to be worn out pretty bad; it's been easily 1.5years (2?) since it's been replaced.

I ride and maintain my road bikes regularly, but can be negligent of my FG bike. Low maintenance is a lot of the reason why I own it, but I may have taken that too far.

Will I experience any downsides besides prematurely wearing down my cog and chainring? I don't notice any decrease in the performance of the drivetrain.

Scrod is a master at multitasking. Also, the reason he posts a lot is because lots of peeps ask him questions, which he normally answers in great detail. Except, of course, if the questions are very lame, which is the case a lot on this forum.

It will shorten your life and affect your sex drive.

Yup. While I'm not sitting there glued to the screen all day long, the main computer at the shop usually has about 15-20 tabs open at all times. When I sit down to answer e-mails, place parts orders, watch cat videos, etc, I often check in to see what you fixiefoos are carrying on about.

well we appreciate you! If you work at retrogression could you let me know how that Alex at400/novatec wheelset looks in person? Solid upgrade over some eighth inch boat anchors or should I save up for Wabis

They look really good in person, similar to the look of Mavic Open Pros.

I've built a few bikes for customers using that wheelset. They feel solid and are pretty light.

Those wheels are laterally stiff, yet vertically compliant.

Yeah, I thought there was no performance degradation until I actually changed my chain. WOW! what a difference. The old chain had stretched to 12 and 1/8 . The new chain made the bike feel new again.
