hey don't go knocking pbr, it's union made! whenever my dad makes it back to the states (he teaches in cambodia) we spend the week drinking pbr, listening to hank williams and playing rummy.

Ha, another "I think I'm a poseur" thread! But hey you spelled poseur right, you're ahead of the game already!

This is my take on the whole posenger thing and it still stands

The folk who've never been messers but adopt the "messenger style" don't qualify as posengers any more than hardcore music enthusiasts that aren't actually in a band but have leather pants and spiked belts do. It just looks good and it works so why not do it, right?

So actually the only thing that could qualify as a "posenger" would be someone that adopts the style but then also rides around a city 10 hours a day from building to building pretending to drop off and pick up packages...none of you do that do you?

As for beer, I've sure drunk my fair share of PBR...in Seattle I even drank enough to get (really)drunk and with the low alcohol content it's got that's a task! I vaguely remember saying goodnight to some people sitting on the curb outside the party then turning around to some cops and loudly asking "Hey's where's za exit? where's za door outta here?" They laughed and politely pointed out that I was already outside and graciously allowed me to stumble on my way and since I was sleeping in an old VW van parked nearby we didn't have far to stumble.
I prefer Guinness and no messengers have ever knocked me for that, at least not when I'm drinking with them which is rarely these days, too busy.

So you're in Portland? You should go to the NACCC to be happening soon! You'll likely have to pay to party without a racer number and they may have a few private parties but many parties are fairly openish and it's always fun to watch the races/events and look at the sweet eye candy rides that show up.
I'd be there but I'm getting married that weekend, an excellent reason for us to miss a big race that we've made it too for several years now!

for your next feat will you be riding your fixie up K2?

that's the truth! I'm not touching it now, been off the bike for a few months and even though I do a fair bit of walking I'm getting a...lil paunch? it's aint a belly quite yet but I'm worried if I don't start riding again soon it'll get worse! I hear on guys my age it's a slippery slope, once you get one at all it's hell to be rid of. I can't exercise like exercise you know, where it's just exercise? I have to be doing something.

Nobody that rides to work can possibly be a poseur (unless they ride less than 1/4 mile).

Microbrew? Macrobrew hardly fits the definition of the rest of the world's definition of beer.

Vegan? Does that mean you do secret rituals in the park late at night?

Music?

Style? Frankly, I'm not into "fixie style"- mostly for my own reasons- but I don't judge other people for it... maybe I feel I'm a bit too old for the "fixie style thing."

A poseur (and I'm sorry to even discuss the reality of the term) would be someone who spent a small fortune on the newest and best fixed bike and clothing/accessories, then maybe rode 3 miles/week on the walking trail around the local pond.

filtersweep's got it right. if "poseurs" exist in the fixie world, they're not the grad students and graphic artists who dress kind of like messengers as they commute to work from brooklyn.

moe, who runs keiren cycle cafe in berlin, put it perfectly. "everywhere you go in williamsburg, you see them. the hipster walking his pista next to his japanese girlfriend."

Just saw a kid at my school with an IRO. He looked like he didn't know what he was doing, kinda worried he's gonna get run over. He had clipless pedals, while wearing sandals. Not too smart, but he did have a front brake. He must be riding that brake like crazy.

hehe, I was just at an LBS thinking towards a new ride for soon. I'm going with an SS setup but probably a new track frame w/2 rear wheels so I can SS the street and ride that new drome in London occasionally on the weekends.

I'm gonna wear the same old duds I always have, I wonder how long it will be b4 some rookie sneers at me for riding what only looks like a fixie..that'd be cool! I think I'll get a hurt n sad look and pedal away when that happens, bolster his pride n such to be nice.

hops are from rabbits. cultivated though, they don't go out and catch the wild ones.

i can't believe i just read all three pages of this.

really, what's the messenger fixation? riding your bike for a living is a good way to make a buck, but it's still a job at the end of the day- not a lifestyle.

There used to be, but not really any more. Some 'fining' agents used for clearing beer or wine are made from fish parts (called isinglass), but that is not a common fining agent anymore. Usually brewers filter instead of fine, or they use carageenan, or "irish moss", which is from seaweed. Occasionally they use gelatin, which isn't a vegetarian product, but that isn't very popular these days either.

If you drink microbrews, you can ask the brewer yourself, you'll find most don't use animal-based fining agents anymore.

What were we talking about, anyway?

Peace,
Sam

Bikes: '97 HooKooEKoo + '75-'85 Fuji Regis fixie conversion.

If someone can make you feel like a poser by their look, then they are snobs.(?)
Maybe the look was, "Who is the new messenger?"
Sobriety is not for posers.
I can pose harder than any of you.
As someone whospends 20 hours a week in tractor trailers at UPS, anyone in any office is a poser.
Now where is my white studded belt?

a background on me:
only a few years ago i was a strict mountain biker. then i bought a touring bike and started commuting to work every day. i fell in love with the bicycle. about 6 months ago i got a beater fixie off e-bay, and got hooked. about 2 months ago i got a surly cross check with flip-flip hub and am completely infatuated. i really only ride the fixed side, and even though i have brakes i never use them.

some more info that might be of use:
~i am an avid beer drinker... being from the nw, i've always had a thing for good micro beers. i still drink them, but find myself ordering pbr occasionally. i'm not sure what's happening here.

~i'm vegan, but have been for 8 years, so i don't think i did it for fixie style reasons.

~my music of choice has mostly become various indie rock bands, and a few odd klezmer or gypsy punk bands. before my fixie-hood, i mostly listened to reggae, psyche, and jazz.

~i have gone from using velcro ankle straps to rolling my right pant leg up.

i'm just confused about all this, as i admit that what i am attracted to is partly the style, but it's mostly about the ride. i don't think i can go back to geared bikes for very many miles. i still do ride my mountain bike and love the singletrack, but it's not the same as it used to be. i still listen to reggae, but would rather put on some boards of canada or something....

...yeah but i'm not sure if that's true. i was at the ups office right after 5:00 the other day and there were a bunch of messengers there dropping off packages. they all looked at me like, "what do you think you're doing, riding a fixie?"

not that i'm dissing them, i'm just curious what's up. the way i see it is like wangster, as long as you're riding your bike, it's all good.

maybe they're the ones trying too hard?

thanks that makes me feel all fuzzy inside.

good point bringing up pretentious philosophical literature. i'm heavy into the beats and such: ginsburg, kerouac, cassady, dostoevski, chomsky, etc.

more fixie poser points for me!

i don't remember what kind of beer that was in the picture.

I think you're putting too much thought into all this. don't worry
