Fixie Project

Hi All,

New to the forum and about to attempt my first fixie conversion.

I picked this bike up recently

It looks better than it is - but not to worry I was only after the frame which I believe to be an early 70s Reynolds 531. Apart from the crankset (which I will convert properly) the rest of the parts are destined of the parts bin / ebay.

The wheel with Helico-Matric Hubs will end up on ebay to be replaced with some Alesa/sachs I have in my stash. Ill grid off the eyelets and the lamp mounts and then powercoat in a mid-dark grey. A Weinmann centre pull will go on the front. I have a vintage alloy saddle post in the stash along with a B17N which is due some butchery.

Bars - either some bullhorns using the existing stem or Ill use a quill adaptor and and mount a more modern but retro looking stubby bar. What ever the bar Ill fit a one finger lever near to the stem

Grips will be black to match the saddle

Will keep you posted.

Modern as in newly constructed based on 1'1/8 etc - retro looking as classic styling.

Old ebay pic - picked these up a few months back. They have been in the box since. Will mock up and see how it looks as I currently don't have any bull horn / drops to modify.

Please don't. It's a work of art with a respected 531 pedigree. If you want to do a conversion that's fine, just dont irreversibly butcher the frame.

Mocked up

Frame shaved and nearly stripped

Wheels spaced and dished

Saddle post need few mins on the lathe as it's a touch too wide

Paint - clear coat steel - gas monkey style?

Need to get a cable hanger and some 80s alloy box platform pedals

Not the easiest site to use from a mobile device

The cost of powder coating is £100. Not willing to spend that.

I've used CanBrush paints on a number of projects and very happy with the results. It's a thicker paint than most spray paint and is very hard wearing.

Still tempted with grey either c4 or c42 - used the latter on a recently restored Lathe and really like it
