Bicycle Connection in Cockeysville is pretty rad. the upstairs is where they store boxes of old inventory from bike stores they buy out. Definanlty a place to go if you need cheap components like tires, seatposts, and stuff like that, as they really dont have too much track specific stuff.

a little pricey, but super friendly and super knowledgable.can order and/or custom build just about anything you could want. all the guys there are really nice and they certainly ain't bad on the eyes either....

the heart and soul of this shop was mike the mechanic. unfortunately, word on the street is that he is out indefinitely with a wicked bad broken ankle. damn bmx'ers. anyway, roger the owner would bend over backwards for anyone, but as far as i'm concerned...mike was that shop. he converted my bike and built and laced me custom wheels.....however, until he comes back, i'm going elsewhere. sorry roger.

haven't had any personal experiences with this place, but i would not ever go there. owner penny is a raging ***** and doesn't support the messenger scene in baltimore at all. won't go there just because i am too loyal to my friends...

oh, and have never been, but apparently performance cycles out near perring parkway is supposed to be good too.
hope that was helpful. don't know anywhere else in the area that deals with single speeds or track bikes.

The BikeKing, which now can be found at https://www.houseoftrack.com/ had gotten, imho, a needlessly bad rap on this forum. Some folks have apparently had less than good, reportedly even bad dealings with them. However. ALL, and I mean ALL my dealings with them have been more than tight, professional, satisfactory, and just plane pleasant. Don't believe the anti-hype. They have great prices and great/personable service. They make me happy and I'm a huge fan!

Used parts in the East Bay?

--Re-Cycle, in Berkeley, on Sacramento: they claim to have a Used Parts room, anyone been?

--Pioneer Cycles on Rio Vista, off Piedmont Ave (down by 41st) in Oakland. I've only been there once. it is an old-school shop with a good vibe to it. I asked about used parts and the guy said if I knew what I was after he could look in his "parts graveyard," ha! Lots of old tenspeeds awaiting restoration, some new bikes, and what seemed like a small but useful selection of (new) parts.

I agree with all of the above. Preformance, who normally wouldn't get a nod from me (they bought out a LBS chain and then liquidated thier selection over time.. kind of irks me), has two STELLER KICK ASS Employee's who know fix, and know thier stuff. Ernesto (I think at the Bonita store now?) and Lee (at the La Mesa Store). Ernesto builds wheels that can't be broken, and Lee knows every option there is and if he doesn't finds something else. Always good, always kick ASS.

Adams Ave is quickly becoming a cool place in my book. Friendly, fun, and down to earth.

I saw Applecart in an LBS once and he was completely dicking with the guy there... He's in it for the dollar, to be sure, and nothing wrong with that, it's life, but he put some un needed screws on **** that didn't need to be pressured. I'd steer clear simply on the fact he acts like an ass clown...

ok, follow-up on Pioneer Bicycles in Oakland. this week I went there to buy a used front brake for my fixie. Holly and I ended up buying a used Peugeot UO-8 he had, which he hadn't fixed up yet. Holly had her eye on it from last week's visit. Super cute--white with chrome forks, an old Stronglight cottered crank, etc.

He said he'd sell it for 100-150 when it was fixed up, and we asked what he'd take for it as is, so we could fix it up ourselves (for Holly's ten- or single-speed, not sure yet). He sold it to us for $50, including a headset adjustment. He also dug up an old Weinmann sidepull for me, and ended up just throwing it in with the rest of the stuff. So, total for a sweet old Peugeot, two sets of brake pads and a used brake was something like 65 bucks. To think we almost bought a beat-up Raleigh for 40 bucks earlier that morning at a yard sale.

The owner's name is Edmund. He clearly encourages do-it-yourselfers. Not exactly fixed- or track-specific, but a great resource for good old bikes, and he will see some more of our business in the future.

CityBikes in Adams Morgan is the only place to get track parts in DC. See Shawn.

The Pro Shop in Georgetown caters mostly to the roadie set, but they have a lot of nice stuff. They have a good tire selection. You can find one or two track parts there, like clips, but that's about it. I go there sometimes because I like the people and the shop.

Sadly that's it for DC proper. Someone else can address the suburbs (like college park, if it hasn't already been mentioned).

these were deadbeat buyers, but still a waste of time and money - I haven't sold anything bike-related on ebay for a long time (sticking with local CL). Last component I bought on ebay (a crank) was the wrong size, even though I specified the max size I needed. The seller (bikemaui) was very cool and refunded my $ including return shipping....still a pain in the butt, though, running around to the PO, waiting for part/money etc.

I just moved from Brookline to Southie - the best spot in/around Brookline is Boston Bicycle on Beacon St. by Park Drive/Fenway. Their sister store called Cambridge Bicycles on Mass Ave near Kendall Sq. is also solid. Harris Cyclery is lauded as the best spot, but they are out in Newton. I've had mixed results at International Bicyle on Brighton St. PM me if you seek other info.

Broadway Bikes in Cambridge is good. Harris Cyclery in West Newton (very close to some parts of Brookline, so I'd say you should check them out. It's a 10 minute ride for me from Brighton Center.) is great. Cambridge/Boston Bikes are OK, but they are overpriced, and are well known for trying to push buyers into stuff they don't want/need. Example: I went with a friend to Cambridge Bikes to get a 1" threaded road fork, as he wanted a front brake on his older non-drilled De Bernardi track frame. He wanted the cheapest fork they had. The guy who runs the shop wouldn't even admit to the fact they HAD used road forks. He just kept pushing a silly bladed air-foil aluminum fork that my friend definately didn't want, and everytime we asked about anything cheaper/used, he was like "Oh, we don't deal with much of that....you want this!!". Eventually we got the kid who works in the back (nice dude, rides that big chopper at CM) to show us the stock of used forks (they had at least 20 in the service area), found a cheap chromed fork, and brought it up to the dude up front to pay for it. Not cool.

I've had iffy dealings with the people at Cambridge bikes- rude staff. Their stuff is overpriced though, some things are like 10-20% more than other shops. I guess on the plus is that they have lots of stuff for you to look at, and a large bag section. I don't think I'll ever go back.

Boston Bikes was slightly better the time I was in there.

Broadway bikes on 351 Broadway in Cambridge is by FAR the best shop I've ever been into. Cool people, rent tools for very reasonable rates, sell TONS of used parts for really cheap.

For San Francisco, no one beats Road Rage Bikes or the Hayes St. Freewheel.
Travis at the freewheel is super-friendly and the Road Rage guys are old and know their ****. Not to mention I've seen gold and red Phil Wood hubs there. They always have some black or silver Phil's in stock.

In Indy, I'm partial to Indy Cycle Specialist. We don't have much in terms of the old stuff and bikes that are well-suited to fixie conversions, but are doing well with Surly, Independent Fab, On One, KHS, and others.

Montano Velo in Oakland (on Piedmont ave, um, around 4200 block) has taken over the store they used to share with a triathlon-sports supplier. They have some wicked cool fixies and singlespeeds. i was in over the weekend and saw an all-black fixed gear they were building for someone. I mean ALL black, all the logos blacked out, black chainring, blackblackblack. it was SICK.

I've always found the staff at Pro Shop to be knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and as enthused about bikes as I am. It's a nice shop, too.

I've had mixed experiences with the sales staff at City Bikes; sometimes they've been pretty cool and friendly, other times they can't seem to be bothered. I guess it just depends on who you get. Their mechanics have always been pretty straight-forward, though, and have done some really nice work when I needed it, so no complaints there...
